New procedures for map design projects – image 1

YDers,First, allow me to apologize for my inability to keep up with my Superintendent of Maps duties over the past month. I've been very busy with schoolwork and other life stuff and simply haven't had time for Yard Duty.At the urging of others, I've decided that it is in the best interests of the YD community if I take on two assistants to help me with the map design process. Paul Metzger and Corey Vernier have graciously volunteered to take on the burden of some of the more mundane duties, which will allow me to focus on ensuring that the finished projects are as good as they can be. Please welcome the new Assistant Superintendents of Maps!Henceforth, designers will follow this schedule of events:
1. Submit a proposal to Paul.
2. Upon approval, submit a composite image to Dave.
3. After receiving the processed image, lay track and work with Corey on improvements. Final review will be performed by Dave.
4. After completion of trackwork, submit .his file to Paul for review of connections.
5. Final review of entire project will be performed by Dave and, once approved, submitted to Jim.Please review the Process at the link below for additional information.Additionally, the Office of Maps staff is concerned that there have been too many projects approved and not enough completed. As a result of this, we ask that designers with projects already listed in the MIP refrain from submitting additional projects until those already listed have been completed.Lastly, we would like to announce that Steven Presnal has taken over the position of Superintendent of Home Yards.Thank you for your cooperation and patience as we transition to this new system of project approval and review.-Dave

RE: New procedures for map design projects

Dave, Corey and PaulI will first start off with a question that struck me when I read the post. Will all current unapproved proposals be transferred over to Paul or do they need to be resent?

RE: New procedures for map design projects

All current unapproved proposals have been forwarded to me. I will start working on them tomorrow, taking into account the limiting of new projects until current projects are finished. Yours are all there.Paul Metzger

Wow, sounds like a whole bureaucracy developing for mapmaking! "...the burden of some of the more mundane duties."
Gee, I thought it was pure ecstasy making maps. Anyway, focus on school, Dave. It is more important. See you when we see you! Jim

Thanks for the support, Jim. It's tough going here in Terrible Hole... but I guess that's what you get when you choose a school like mine!Hopefully I'll be able to get some images processed this weekend; I have exams the rest of the week that will be demanding my attention.-Dave

RE: New procedures for map design projects

I have created a new e-mail address so that map submissions don't get tied up with all my other e-mail, because sometimes legit e-mails get tossed in the junk mail folder. So, please send trackwork submissions to me at:LongHoodForward@hotmail.comThanks!Corey Vernier

RE: New procedures for map design projects

LAST EDITED ON Jan-22-04 AT 01:27 PM (EST)

I am glad things are starting to move along, that all the map proposals in last 28 days will get a look at and be ok or not . But I think for paul to handed all the new proposals is too much for one person to do . This is my idea , to make things flow better. Have Three assistant for Dave , two for The Usa as far as viewing and oking new proposals . and one for the Trackwork whick is Correy (Longhoodforward) Paul could take half of the USA and someone could take the other part of the Usa . Correy could still review the track work and send any trackwork back for changes . We my background , and the past Travels I have made to Washington , Oregon and California , to the state of Idaho , I feel I would make have done good job at being one of Dave Asistant . I was one has done the images for Anthony (Tigeracl) Dan
(larsenisi) I have work with Anthony with his trackwork skills and helping him out with building good track work . I don't know if Paul wanted the Post of asistant , but I would found members to do maps that need so much on Yard Duty . The East is being done so fast that the West is falling behild with the East. We need Bay area of California done so much to get trains in and out of the bay area . Roseville is still on the back burner , that no one has come foward to do it . If someone ask me to do a image for a member , I would be more then willing to do it , as long as it would benfit Yard Duty . Below is how I would divid the Usa , if there was two Assistant for Map Proposals .Steven Presnal-MP 777

Steven,As I stated in my email to you, I feel it will be best at this time if there are only two assistants helping me. Paul has said that he is going to keep a limit on the number of approved projects per designer so that he, Corey and myself do not get overwhelmed with the various stages of project review, and that individual designers aren't working on too many projects simultaneously.Again, I thank you for your offer to help. If time demonstrates that the current Office structure isn't working effectively, we'll reevaluate and consider other options. To address your last concern, Steven, the geographic imbalance of maps is due to the interests of the designers. However, there is historic precedent to this: A century and a half ago, the East had a rapidly-expanding railroad network, and wagon trails were still used to convey people and goods between East and West.In time the West will be filled in, and you'll play an important part in accomplishing that. Until then, please be patient; when YD first started the vast majority of maps were in CA, and it wasn't until myself and Alan Garrett got busy making maps that the East started to develop.-Dave
