Greetings,
Now that we have danced around this problem with no
"official" word on the status, its time to ask the obvious question.
"What is going on? Why havent we heard from Jim or someone in authority
with YD as to whats going on? We are paying members and I feel we deserve
better than this. If it is a server problem beyond control, we should be told this.
If it is a fixable problem, we should be told this too. I, just two days ago, posted an
invite on the RailSpot list trying to attract new members and now this? How is
YD gonna grow if we have these problems? We have already had a few long-term
members quit over similar types of problems and we need responsive leadership
if YD is to survive. Long waits for membership codes, no reply to emails, and
long term problems with the program not being addressed are not helping retain
or attract members. So PLEASE, Jim let us know whats up, I for one, know that
my membership is up in about two weeks and Id like to see some positive action
taken before I commit my limited $$ and many hours to the game. I am working
on my first map and want to be sure it is not for nothing. Joe (TexasJoe)p.s. Isnt the reason that we have TWO forums, is so we can communicate?

RE: Server Probs etc.

In lieu of an official answer, I did some digging to see if I can find out what is going on. The FTP server that Yard Duty tries to connect to is hosted by a company called TJARA NETWORKS, INC. in CA. Even though the server does not respond to ping requests, it is up and responding to FTP and HTTP requests, so it is there. That said, here comes the speculation; When trying to get to Tjara's home page, I get redirected to http://www.icworldnet.com. To save all the techincal details, it appears that Tjara is in the process of changing their upstream provider (who smaller ISP's connect to for internet access) from Quest Communications to ICWorldnet. If this happens to be the case, then there is not much Jim can do but wait until Tjara sorts out their connection issues other than switch to another server. Jim, if this is news to you, you may want to give Sudarmadji Adji a call at Tjara networks. I would be very wary of this hosting company though, as they do not list a real address or contact for their new hosting setup, just a p.o. box, and this would be the second time they changed, the first being from ATMLINK Inc.As for the rest of the members, there is not much we can do, short of creating a backup server ourselves and redirecting Yard duty, but hopefully we will hear an ETA of some sort soon. Paul asked me to pass this on:"Could you post on the forum (since everyone does not get the Yahoo posts)
that we can still run trains, and then email them to each other. If
anyone has questions on how to do this, they can contact me directly at
paulmetzger @ juno.com. I say this because of Richard's comments '...there

Richard, how did you find out what server YD uses? Is it 65.123.253.151?

The easiest way to find out what servers your computer is connecting to is to use the netstat command. From a command prompt (cmd in winXP, command in win 9x) type "netstat -a" without the quotes and you will get a list of all the connections at that point in time. In troubleshooting Yard Duty, I used what is called a packet sniffer to monitor all packets on my network. This let me listen in on the connection between Yard Duty on my computer and the Yard Duty server.

Interesting detective work. Maybe the company got sold or something. Adji is my contact person and usually gets things up & running for me real quick. Don't know what happened this time.Jim

RE: Server Probs etc.

No trouble at all Jim. This is, after all, what I do. I have done a lot of tech support in my day and helped manage the transition of a few thousand hosting clients to Telus when they bought out the ISP I worked for. If there are any questions that you may have or if I can help in anyway, just give me a shout. I have a spare linux machine about 25 feet from me that we can setup as a temp server Take care,Richard
