I just wanted to say that everyone should post more trains, especially in the anyone section, just to keep the game exciting for everybody. I know we already know this, but still...

The idea is to add some of your own trains or cars. What i do is to make up a train with my own cars in my yard, one train with about 50 cars for each direction (i have 4 main directions to send trains to). Every time i add about 5-10 cars to an outgoing train.

I thought the idea was to receive trains from other people, switch, load/empty them & send them on their onwards journey. With the amount of players we now have we should have enough cars in the system, without the established players having to create any more. I would have thought the new players were creating enough extra cars to make up for any deletions. On the subject of creating trains, could players give a little thought to what they are sending & where. As an example, autoracks do not go to mines.

Dave, I have about a thousand cars tied up in the Selkirk traffic jam... Anyone need some Conrail power? I have 82 unassigned engines lying around (and spilling out of) the Fuel Plant, and more on the way...On a serious note:
One of the problems in the game is that when you select a block of cars and assign it to a random group of states, or random maps within a state, the game doesn't consider what maps can and can not unload what car types, so you'll end up with a group of cars for Indiana including auto racks bound for Cayuga, a group of cars for New York with stock cars bound for Selkirk, and a group of cars for New Jersey with lots of non-intermodal car types bound for North Bergen & South Kearny. Personally, I've grown tired of having to local-delivery these inappropriately-assigned cars, and I'm just outright deleting them. If Jim ever gets his system running again (has anyone heard from him recently??), I'd really like to see the feature that only assigns a newly-loaded or created car to an appropriate destination extended to include the other random-assignment functions. Of course, players should still be allowed to manually assign a car to wherever single destination they wish, such as the auto trains that run between Calumet & Ayer.-Dave

RE: Post trains!

I've room for CR power at Albany Dave. Send them on On the subject of wrong cars to wrong yards, the destination can always be changed manually before they are sent.

RE: Post trains!

I admit that it is annoying to deliver the reefer to North Bergen Dave but that is part of the game, gotta deal with it.However, on that not I was under the impression that Jim had it set up so that only cars could be created for maps where they could be loaded/unloaded. Dave is right, if it isn't this way it should be.

Chris,Correct, cars will be created appropriately. However, if you assign a group of cars to a state or to random locations in the Train Info window, they'll get assigned without any consideration of what the destination map can and cannot handle.-Dave

RE: Post trains!

The system goes further than the yard boundaries, that´s why there is a local delivery option, every day trains run on lots of shortlines delivering the weirdest stuff to the weirdest places, so i think this is normal, and what is wrong with sending out local delivery cars? it´s 40 seconds work.At corwith i can use some 10 engines, somehow i send more engines out than the number coming in. Please make sure you have 2 hp/ton in front of a train. Can i send the CR engines to the south (NC/FL etc.)?

Wow, Yellow, it is nice to hear such great insight into the game from a newer member. You are 100% correct. Let's make this the quote of the day:"The (Yard Duty) system goes further than the (individual map) boundaries..."People should remember that the unloader/loader values only reflect actual sidings in the map, and not the sidings that may exist just off the map! As a historical note, the initial concept of the game was 100% delivery via the 'easy way'. Delivery via the 'hard way' was an AFTERTHOUGHT! The original inspiration of the game was to sort cars in yards and route trains/cars to their proper destinations, with the actual delivery mechanism being secondary. The 'local delivery' feature continues to provide a meaningful way for handling those cars with 'wrong destinations', although deleting them is okay as well. Of course, getting Autoracks at a mine is not the greatest thing, but you can always imagine that there is an auto unloading facilty in the area. Just use your imagination. (That's what I learned from watching Barney, the purple dinosaur, with my son.) One gold star fro YellowSignalKingJPW

I think it is good practice and good citizenship for all players to be in the habit of creating & posting (meaningfull) trains, whether created brand new or created by working a yard. It is a mistake to think 'there are enough cars in existence', since there are many ways in which cars leave the system, including a) newbie downloads trains but doesn't stick with the game b) player deletes train, for whatever reason c) player's hard drive crashes and has to re-install, d) player abandons cars in a map he no longer (or rarely) works, etc...As a general rule, one should try to create/post as many trains as one downloads.KingJPW
