Yard Duty - 1.2.38 Released – image 1

LAST EDITED ON Jul-23-03 AT 04:17 AM (EDT)

Features:
1) Improved the recent uncoupling feature as per Chris Lee's critique. Updated the Instruction Manual to describe it as follows:'Uncoupling Trains'
When uncoupling a train, two new cuts are created. At this point the question arises as to which cut the player will control. There are two distinct rule for deciding this. I am calling these the ‘count’ method and the ‘selection’ method of determining the controlled train. Most commonly, the ‘count’ method is used. This method grants control to the cut with the greater number of engines. If the engine count is equal, then the number of freight cars is considered as well, granting control to the train with more cars. If the car count is equal as well, then a random decision is made. However, if the selected car is actually an engine, then the ‘count’ method proves to be unsatisfactory. In this case, the ‘selection’ method is used instead. The ‘selection’ method gives control to the new cut of cars which contains the selected engine. In other words, the ‘selection’ method depends on HOW you select the coupler. With this method you always control which cut wins. This allows, for example, a helper engine at the end of a train to be removed (it would be the loser cut using the ‘count’ method). Also, if you have a string of 10 engines, it allows you to remove one and pull away from the remaining nine, which would not be possible using the ‘count’ method.
Improvements:
2) After changing your user name, you must restart Yard Duty before it will take effect.
3) Made the version control for posted maps based on date, instead of version number.
This makes it easier for me to post updated maps which will warn you that your version
is outdated.
4) You can assign an empty car with a destination on 'OK:Unassigned', in the same manner
as you assign actual destinations.Fixes:
None
Enjoy,
JIm

RE: Yard Duty - 1.2.38 Released

Jim,
I'd like to see another problem addressed that I deal with everyday at Calumet. There are retarders on the east end of every yard track, and whenever I try to pull a cut of cars from that end, the first car (the one sitting on the retarder) does the stretch routine. My engines may be pulling east but the cut goes west. I considered changing the retarders to regular track...but I'd like to know if this is a fixable problem first. This would also influence the development of my Hamlet, NC hump yard map. Thanks!Corey Vernier

Jim,After the last two updates, attempting to run YD with an older version results in a repetitive crash that can only be cleared by Ctrl+Alt+Del. Can you try to work things so that, as in the past, a message stating the need to update YD appears?-Dave

Dave,Unfortunatley, this happenend because I made fundamental changes to the structure of the System.ini file. If the old version cannot read the System.ini, then it can't even tell you that your version is out of date. It is a rare event that I change the structure, but it was required to add the 'L' key in 1.2.37 and for the version date thing in 1.2.38. I resisted the 'L' key for a long time in part because of this issue (so be careful for what you ask, because you might get it! ). I don't forsee any more changes to the file so things should work as before with future required releases."Getting better all the time"Jim

Yes, I would like to address this problem. If you know of a way to repeat this problem, please let me know exactly how and where. My main trouble in fixing this is I can't make it happen over and over so as to examining what's going on.Jim

RE: Yard Duty - 1.2.38 Released

Jim,
Make sure you have the version of Calumet yard that Paul was using...which was updated with some nice features including the retarders at the east end of each yard track. Kick a cut of cars into the west end of a yard track and let them roll all the way through so the retarder stops them. Then try to pull (not push) the cars out the east end of the track and see what happens. Thanks for looking at this problem!Corey Vernier
