I was playing around in the NMJ and noticed numbers on the train cars, I figured they went to the siding in that yard map? Right? Then I noticed how it changes the destination to another yard that could use them? Right? But what about sidings in a industry map. In Maine (for example) We put Bucksport as a industry. When I bring empties for another yard to it do I have to manually put in a siding number on the car. Is their anyway to make it seem like the industry is demanding cars, instead if creating a train and riding it in. Would it help if we changed the industry into a yard where it is able to store cars. So other people that have cars that that industry could use it would route it there. Or what if every siding in that state had a different siding number and when you send it to that state it would pick the siding it would best fit or something like that?

Hmm... taking a look at SoCal, I'm not sure that statewide numbering would work. Can you imagine a 3-digit siding number on an ore jenny?Best bet is to ask Jim to have the yard type reassigned. I'm still waiting for him to change Rotterdam Jct and Cushing Stone to individual maps, not the satellites of Mohawk as he posted. The three maps belong to different railroads and are a number of miles apart, so I'm not even sure why they were posted that way.-Dave

Dave, Since you are off vacation I will now reply. You are asking me to make Cushing and Rotterdam yard maps, however neither contain a yard! Cushing is a mainline/industry and Rotterdam is essentially mainline with a siding. The type of map is determined "by the trackage they contain". I cannot justify making these full blown yard destinations in YD. However, after examining the railroad affiliation in each map, I do think it would be better to make these two maps sattelites of Selkirk, since they are both contain on the Conrail mainline, right?. This I will do. Sure, Selkirk is a bit far, but a car from California going directly to Cushing would be a big sin. Anyway, the parent/sattelite relationship can always be changed when a yard closer to these maps is added.Jim

Ok, gotcha. Chenge 'em to satellites of SK for the time being, and we can change 'em to satellites of South Schenectady when I get around to doing that yard. And for your information, Rotterdam Jct. is considered a terminal yard by (the real) Guilford, since it's the westernmost extent of their trackage and an interchange point with CSX. A yard need not look like Selkirk to be classified as such.-Dave

Dave, Remember, a yard map in YD is another way of saying that the map is a valid destinaiton for cars from all over North America. I doubt that a car from CA would be destined for this particular location. It would go to a larger yard and be sent out on a local job. A yard map should be a place where routing, sorting, and distribution can take place. Rotterdam looks like a fine mainline/interchange map, but I doubt that much sorting takes place here or that local trains are sent out from this point. There is nothing from preventing it from being used as an interchange point, it's just that no cars will have Rotterdam as a destination. In conclusion, the fact that cars are interchanged here, or that GRS considers it a 'yard' is not really a valid reason to make it a yard map in YD. Andrew,Q:"...I figured they went to the siding in that yard map? Right?"
A: This is correct.Q: "...Then I noticed how it changes the destination to another yard that could use them? Right?
A: When LOADING a car, a new destination is assigned but the siding number is not assigned at this time. The siding is assigned to loaded cars WHEN they arrive at a destination map (if possible), whether it be an industry or not.Q: "...But what about sidings in a industry map. In Maine (for example) We put Bucksport as a industry. When I bring empties for another yard to it do I have to manually put in a siding number on the car.
A: Yes. The LOADING of cars in YD is a manual process. YOU must assign them a destination (and a siding if desired). YD does not assign empties to a random map, nor does it assign a siding to empties when arriving at a map. Empties should be taken to a yard and classified by car type and then assigned to a map (and maybe a siding) This is how YD handles empties.Q: Is their anyway to make it seem like the industry is demanding cars, instead if creating a train and riding it in.
A: Not really possible at the moment.Q: Would it help if we changed the industry into a yard where it is able to store cars. So other people that have cars that that industry could use it would route it there. Or what if every siding in that state had a different siding number and when you send it to that state it would pick the siding it would best fit or something like that?
A: Wouldn't help. This is not possibleJim

In Maine I can only assign cars to MNJ Yard, Bangor Yard, Derby Yard. So how can I or someone send cars to Bucksport or Searsport, or do I take the cars in NMJ yard that have no unloading or loading sidings and send then to Searsport or Bucksport. If that's the case it would take forever cause you would have to seperate them by type then divide them into groups to ship. Is there anyway as you ride a train into a map it would put a siding number on a car if the siding would accept it.?

Q: Is there anyway as you ride a train into a map it would put a siding number on a car if the siding would accept it.?A: I think you will find that this is exactly how YD works for LOADED cars, whether it's a sattelite or parent map. Note that Bucksports is a sattelite of Bangor Yard, and therefore can unload an car destined for Bangor Yard at Bucksport. In other words, Bucksport is 'part of' Bangor yard. However, these maps have no siding numbers assigned, so you may not have seen the random siding assignment feature in action yet.

Unless we had some kind of waybill reference which indicated the exact industry that a car was going to (which I think would probably be a pain to implement), cars must be routed to the nearest yard, and then sorted out to go to the various satellite maps/industries. This isn't too far from the way it is done in the real world, just that they have more paper work and a specific industry listed for every car. We must rely on the local YM's knowledge.
