Well, i've downloaded the latest full version to check it out... however, every time i run it i get the following error:YardDuty.exe
ERROR: 4EAE
DESCRIPTION: 425 Can't open data connection.
IN: subActionGetTrainFromFTPand then the game just sits idle... clicking on the buttons pretty much always results in something along the lines of "Runtime error, Invalid property array index" or "Subscript out of range" and the application is gone. Needless to say, this tends to reduce number of 'trials' left really quickly.Perhaps the whole 'shareware/trial' system would make more sense in finished product (and when the author makes up their mind about the price ) not in what's apparently an early beta?..

I'll be happy to register you. Send me a code. Part of the Beta testing is to make sure the licensing works. It sounds like your machine is having trouble connecting to the FTP server. The first error is the important one, the others are a result of it.KingJPW

RE: can't get it to work...

Ohh okay, i'll get around it in a minute here's something what looks like another problem with licensing system, btw: after running the program a few times (6-7 or so) i've decided to take a break, hoping the FTP thing would resolve itself somehow... now i ran the game again, only to receive "The aplication didn't initialize properly" errors... i thought maybe the .exe file got corrupted so i uninstalled Yard Duty and installed it again.. but now the game says "Your evaluation period has expired". Darn, if it's smart enough to know it was re-installed, it could also be nice to notice i had quite a number of tries still left

After doing a bit of testing, my suspision is that you may be trying to play the game while not connected to the internet. Is this the case? If so connect to the internet and try again. Perhaps in the future I will make it so you can play 'offline', but at the moment you need to be 'online'.KingJPW

RE: can't get it to work...

Nope, was definitely connected then... what may matter is, i was checking it at work where we have firewall installed. It's configured to let default ftp connections pass through, but if your program uses some non-default ports for commmunication it could perhaps cause problems?..

RE: can't get it to work...

I took a closer look at the issue today, and it turns out the problem was in a way the program communicates with the FTP server and back. Out firewall is configured to let in connections originated from our systems, or incoming new connections on default ports.. however, in case of Yard Duty your FTP server seems to originate new connection (not a direct response to the program calls) starting at its port 20 and trying to connect to my ports 60000 and higher...these weren't allowed to come through. Maybe it'd fix things if the FTP communication were done in passive mode...In any case, i've made some temporary adjustments and got the program to run (registration worked fine, btw ) Patched it to the newest version, but sadly it's very unstable under winNT -- if i have the window with yard photo open, when i scroll around it or a train comes in the yard, the game usually crashes after few seconds due to trying to read memory that doesn't belong to it...maybe it's just NT thing. I'll try the game later at home where i have win2k installed.BTW, would it be possible to add some function to download whole yards automatically..so i don't have to select three different menu commands each time i want to play with new one? that's kinda..repetitive

LAST EDITED ON Oct-04-02 AT 07:03 PM (EDT)

1) The ftp control I'm working with has a 'passive' mode property for firewalls. Perhaps I should set it to 'true' for cases such as yours and see what happens...2) I guess downloading the files all at once should be a future enhancement, but it's low-priority at this point...KingJPW
