Crazy Idea: Moving Vehicles – image 1

So I had a crazy idea last night. I realized it would be very easy for me to add vehicles to the game. Map makers will draw tracks as usual, and assign the tracks to be for autos. The auto tracks will not be visible in game mode, but you will see random little cars driving around. You will be able to make the cars go under bridges, as with trains. If it is an interstate you can make it an 'auto mainline' and the cars will drive faster!. Imagine a car driving down the road, and then takes the onramp and gets on the freeway and then takes off. This will be kind of neat, since all those streets and highways look awefully empty right now. Jim

RE: Crazy Idea: Moving Vehicles

Cool idea jim , could you make some of those car run around a road , when a train is coming , making it look like they won't stop for the train and they are putting there life at risk.

Jim,As long as you make the option for it to turn off, currently I'm lacking some FPS in yards in which I have a lot of cars and really wouldn't want something to detract further.Chris Lee

I assume that the drivers will be intelligent enough to stop at occupied grade crossings? (We can make some exceptions, such as for the gent I witnessed Sunday who swerved around a car stopped at an unoccupied GX, took out the crossbuck/stop sign pole, hit the rail, flew over the tracks, landed in the ditch, blew out a tire, and rolled to a stop 10' from the car I was sitting in.)-Dave

I think its a good idea, and my problems with it have already been mentioned. 1 - make sure the vehicle traffic can be turned off (with 1000+ RR cars in Debutts at one time, my computer is not too happy with me at times)2 - controlled car/train interaction at grade crossingsI think it will help add that little bit more realism to the game...make it more of a part of the greater whole. LAST EDITED ON May-16-03 AT 01:48 PM (EDT)

Also, Jim, can you please post all maps you have on-hand before working on new features? You've had Selkirk & Co. for 11 days now, along with Corey's Boylan Jct. I have four submitted maps on-hand that are almost ready to be submitted (and there are more coming), but I'm going to hold off on that until your current plate has been cleared off. The core facilities for the program functioning as intended are now in place, and it is the growth in map quantity that is now necessary. Thanks!Addendum: I just loaded YD and took a look at Mission Tower. Could you please hold yourself to the same standard as the rest of the designers and post completed maps? The game is no longer in the urgent-expansion stage it was last autumn, and we should now strive to ensure that all maps that get posted are complete.(Please note that I wrote this wearing the hats of both an impatient designer/yardmaster and the Superintendent of Maps concerned about the growth & quality of the network.)-Dave
