Thinking about 'Teams' – image 1

You know, I was just thinking about teams. The whole idea about teams was to get people working together, but it seems like people send trains to specific individuals more than within their team. Maybe it would be better to abandon the idea of 'joining' a team and instead allow any player to download a train for any railroad. This way a person who 'feels' like working for CSX at the moment can do so, and the next day he can 'work' for BNSF, for example. What do you think?KingJPW

RE: Thinking about 'Teams'

To be perfectly honest, the reason I post trains to specific individuals is that I got tired of my trains being "hijacked" and routed contrary to instructions. The only way to be sure that they would go the right way was to send them to specific persons. It saddens me that this is the case, as I would definitely prefer to post to teams or even "anyone." Even though I post to individuals, it is always done with their team affiliation in mind. The NS team members have worked closely with one another, handing off trains from one area to another, allowing the various team members to focus on the geographical area that interested them, as well as contributing to the overall flow of traffic through the NS area.As well, we have interchanged with all of the other teams in a very prototypical fashion, enhancing, at least for me, the enjoyment of the sim.I personally think that the team concept is one of the simulations strong points.Paul Metzger

RE: Thinking about 'Teams'

Jim,
I'm hesitant about the idea. I'm all about being prototypical, and I think that we should stick to people being in charge of particular yards. That way we know who to send a train to and what to expect with trains we get from them. Its kinda like having a more solid chain of people than this enigma of 'team CSX' or 'team NS'. Also, in this way we don't have two or more functioning versions of these yards. Say if I'm running Debutts and someone feels like running Debutts for a day, all of a sudden some cars that would have gone to me are now in another dimension on someone else's computer. I definitely prefer having single dedicated yardmasters. I know that NSspike is handling Avondale, so if I get a train from Avondale I know its from NSspike...having a train come in from Avondale but from a different person would be strange. Corey

I'm not quite sure what the team thing is supposed to be all about. Was this thought through in anyway? The idea of posting trains to individual Yard Masters seems much simpler. As Paul & myself have found at Port of Albany we simpy post trains to each other without troubling anyone else. When more people start playing, however, maybe a rethink of the teams idea may be needed. A few quick thoughts, how about a team for large yards (eg Main Man, local switcher, arrivals, departures etc. Other guys may prefer to do the ferrying between yards or just work a particular shortline/industry. Maybe taking it a stage further someone with a love of all things powerful could supply the team with power. On the subject of prototypicality, has anyone thought the newbies may not be as up to speed as the rest of the players? Or guys from other parts of the world may feel like joining but not understand. I find it difficult sometimes, even with Pauls kind help. Maybe we should all be issued with your working timetables & dispatcher lists. Not quite a Dave Honan message

The idea behind the teams was to encourage people to work together. For example, say a new member with an interest in Union Pacific starts playing. He can check what other members are on the UP team and start sending trains to them and develop online relationships with other members, etc... If people are interacting outside of the context of a team that is fine with me. I just want the game to be interactive. Keep in mind that posting your train to a team (theoretically) will be processed faster than when posting to an individual, since more people can run the train. KingJPW

There will always be some people who know more about railroading than others. People who want to operate ultra-true can organize there own team (and accept their own members) and send trains to each other according to their own system. For example, there is nothing preventing you and a few friends from organizing a team called the 'TheBrakemen' and start posting trains to each other using this name. If you are not a 'member' of 'TheBrakemen', you should not download their trains!Jim

I meant things such as using correct reporting numbers, days run, loco numbers etc. Possibly people in Fort Lauderdale may not have a grasp of what happens in Seattle or vice versa.Incidentally as you wish to be "king" would you like me to send you a few lesser royals? Or are you Elvis reincarnate? Our good Queen Liz 2 hasn't abdicated or died yet & I thought you had an unelected President over there
