I was looking at the site for Yard Duty today...it sounds like a lot of fun!But when I checked on membership information, my eyeballs just about popped out of my head! I mean, $39.99 for only EIGHT MONTHS???? Sheesh, that's more than my subscription to Trains! I'm only a college student here, folks...I'm not rich.Would you please consider lowering the price a little, and maybe I'll join?Bruce Bridges

RE: Why the high price?

Let me clarify a bit. I understand it does cost money to run the server and everything, and I don't mind paying a fee to help offset this cost. However, I'm not really interested in helping someone get rich quick.

RE: Why the high price?

This price of 39.95 for a 8 month membership is a Great price , it comes out to be around $ 5.00 a month . alot of Model Railroad clubs are charging a lot more for a membership then $ 5.00 per Month. There is a lot more then just the price of a membership that goes into Yard Duty . Just like Jim said " he has a server and everything to run" Plus he is thinking of putting a ad in Model Trains and that is not cheap. Also at this point , Duty duty does not have a lot of memberships and so jim can't lower the price because of cost of running a server and all the related cost of Yard duty . Jim most likey runs this as a besiness and he would have some over cost to make Yard Duty apearing to other train buffs . Plus what does jim get for his time , everything He edits a map or does a touch up, I can tell you that it is not much at all. I would guess he spend a lot of time just doing touchups for that a map can be put on the server . through the work of Jim and other people , Yard Duty has become very good program to where you can build train and sent it coast to coast and get paid for it . To this Day , I never seen a Software as Good as Yard Duty that is very close like the real thing, Yard Duty copys many things that would happen with Major railroad company. !!!!

Yeah, I know. It's the exact kind of simulation I've been looking for for a very long time. It's a shame he charges so stinkin' much for it! I'm only a college student, after all...Does anyone know of any other simulations that even come close to this that don't charge you an arm and a leg?

RE: Why the high price?

You shouldn't look it as being so high in price , but look at all you get for being a member of Yard Duty. I thought the price was high too in the begining too, but as I got into the gameplay of Yard duty , I saw were my $ 5.00 was going into.Hey, everything right now is high in price , Like cost of Gas , it is $ 2.07 a Gal here and it takes a lot more then $ 5.00 to fill up Your $ 39.95 for Membership for 8 months will go a long way here , if you get good at making maps , that could be your key point to your part of Yard Duty .

RE: Why the high price?

It may look like a high price now but I suggest that you download the trial version, it last 30 days and give it a try. I think that you might really fall for it since it sounds like you have been looking for something like this for a while.Give it a try, you have nothing to lose!Chris Lee

RE: Why the high price?

Bruce-I have Avon in the planning stages; I've already put together the jpg (along with one for CP IU/IJ and Tranfser Yard), although I'm not sure when I'll get to it... my current focus is on CSX in the northeast. If you join up and are interested in doing the yard, I could save you some busywork and pass the images to you for track to be laid. (One strong recommendation I have is that you do a smaller facility or two first, something along the lines of Van or Baker Yards in Terre Haute, before attempting a large yard project. Barr Yard in Chicago was only my second map, and it pretty much sucks compared to the higher-quality yards out there, such as Avondale & DeButts.)No, memberships are not discounted if you create maps. Making maps is considered to be one of perks of the game: The facility you want isn't there? Make it! I feel that's one of the greatest parts of the game's appeal: To be able to create and then work an accurate representation of one of your favorite yards, which is what I'm doing with Selkirk, as I grew up only 8 miles away and have spent many a day enjoying the sights and sounds of the yard. Also, Jim decided a while back that only subcribers can create maps.-Dave
