Jim, I've been thinking about interchanges. Particularly interchange points on maps for teams to interchange cars. I was working on an image for a map at Valdosta, GA. NS and CSX have a junction there and share a large industrial yard (haven't figured exactly what the industry is yet - may be a rail car manufacturer). I can fit the CSX main, the NS main and yard and the industrial yard all on one 500MB map. But I began wonder how you would go about interchanging cars between CSX and NS on the same map. In other words, if I'm working the NS yard and have some cars I need to send CSX for their route, I would have to send a train or a cut of cars to the next CSX map. There would be no way for me to send them the cars on the Valdosta map unless I exit the cars from the map and then turn right around and re-enter the Valdosta map - then upload the file. Sort of a pain and not very prototypical. So I had a thought. Would it be possible to put an exit on a map that rather than entering on ANOTHER map, actually enters on the SAME map at a different location? Say, exit 4 on the Valdosta map enters at exit 5 on the Valdosta map. Could you possibly test this scenario with a small map to see if it would work? My thinking is that this would allow a yard or map to be used by two different teams, each with their own yard/cars/trains. A set of tracks could be alloted to allow the teams to send the interchange traffic to each other without having to exit the map. The tracks could be labeled as 'CSX Interchange' or 'NS Interchange' for example. If this works, it might come in helpful down the road for yards that are used by multiple teams. It might also prevent the need for multiple yards for each team in every city. Two teams could use the same yard map and still be able to interchange with another team using the same map. Just curious as to whether this would work. Thanks. Alan
I believe this can be configured the way you mentioned. It's just a matter of having a map to test it on, but it should work fine. Of course the exit might require a special label or something for the exit. Also, you could always 'remove' the train from the current map and post it to someone else. The problem is that you don't have control over what exit the train will arrive through, because it will always be the most recent exit used. Maybe this feauture could be modified to make it work.Jim
Thanks for the quick reply. > >Also, you could always 'remove' the train from the current >map and post it to someone else. The problem is that you >don't have control over what exit the train will arrive >through, because it will always be the most recent exit >used. Yes, that's what I had noticed. That's why I thought that this would at least let you know where the train was going to come in and you wouldn't neccessarily have to send engines on the train. I'll try it on one of my next maps. Thanks, Alan
Manville lies at Port Reading Junction, where CSAO ends and the NS Lehigh Line and CSX Trenton Line split off for, respectively, Allentown and Philly.-Dave QG 14.32, CSXT Selkirk Sub http://www.davehonan.gcdranet.com/
I just realized this thread is obsolete, because in the next version you will be able to simulate interchanges very nicely with a new ability to send a train to someone in the exact postion that it was at on your map.Jim
