I stumbled over this forem the other day and am now monitoring to see what is going on and I was courious as to what happens here. If there is a group of you guys in the east assembling trains and dispatching them to some other place in the west, the guys in the west receive an E-mail that one of the west-bound trains has arrived and they are to start breaking it down and sending cars to local weatern destinations but then again; A-Ha, the train runs out of diesel fuel in the middle of the Mofat tunnel!! How does anyone know that?? Does all traffic threw the tunnel stop in both directions or does the E-mail just not arrive and all the freight get lost and no one is the wiser? I'm not trying to harrras you guys, I'm really interested in how this actually works and I hope you keep it going cause I think I could really get into this. Thanks!!

Ok, first off, the sim is fairly new, and the national yard system is still being built, so there are gaps (i.e. no Moffat Tunnel at the moment). But, I'll give you an idea of what happens using as an example a train from Ayer, MA going to the west coast. The train is made up by the Guilford team and is sent west, handing off to either CSX or NS at Albany, NY. This is accomplished via posting to the server. NS or CSX will forward the train to Chicago. At Chicago, the train is pulled into either NS Calumet Yard, or CSX Barr Yard, the power is cut off and fueled, and the train is broken down and sorted for various destinations. From there, one train is made up for the Pacific NW, and one for CA, adding on cars that were already in the yard. Appropriate power is put on, then each train is sent west, posting it to the server for the respective team (BNSF for the NW, and UP for CA). Between Chicago and Seattle, there are yards at Des Moines, Gillette, and Sheridan where set offs and pick ups can be made, and the engines topped off if necessary.
Going to CA, the same thing happens at Avondale Yard in KC.At Seattle or LA, the train is sorted, the power is serviced, and trains are sent out to deliver the individual cars to their respective destinations.Since the trains are passed from one team or person to another via the server, multiple persons can be involved in moving the train from its origin to its destination. This is a very simplified description. If you haven't done so already, I encourage you to go to the web site (http://groups.msn.com/YardDuty/), read further, and download the game. I think you will enjoy it. Be careful though, it can be very addictive.Paul Metzger

The email thing happens when the freight is delivered to its final destination. If a train would run out of fuel somewhere, then whoever was running it, would have to send out power from the nearest location, and bring the cripple into the yard, then service the power, and continue the train on its way.One knows what trains are available to run by checking the server.Paul Metzger
