Q: "..while I'm discussing costs, what are the criteria for causing a violent coupling? I've let engines plow into a cut of cars at 40mph and not lost a dime! In the real world a hard coupling is anything over 4mph, so I'd suggest couplings at & above 6mph be penalized."Dave HonanA: I set the 'excessive coupling' speed to delta 30mph (It used to be 20mph) This really has nothing to do with reality, as you know, but is based on the pace that I (and I assume others) play the game. Even at 20mph, almost all couplings were excessive(i.e. the load sound played) If I set it to 6mph, basically EVERY coupling would register as an excessive coupling. So you see, the excessive impact is not meant to mimick reality, but to encourage people to at least try to operate smoothly, and not like a child with a toy train set.Jim
Ahh, gotcha! Pardon my over-attention to detail, I'm guilty of co-oping for a railroad. -Dave QG 14.32, CSXT Selkirk Sub http://www.davehonan.gcdranet.com/
I, on the other hand, do couple at 5 mph or below, and have the acceleration set at 1x, which is why it takes me longer to sort trains. But I like the reality of it. (Not saying everyone should do it this way, just that I like to do it this way.)Paul Metzger NS Team Northern Region
I would set the cost a lot higher then. I admit that I am guilty of hard coupling when I am in a hurry or just have a few minutes to sort a train. If you just raised the cost of a hard coupling without changing the criteria, that might force me (and other children) to take it easy.
