Okay, well I had to ask after I saw a couple of people in the last post who mentioned that they used DEM files for the terrain in their routes. DEM files are from the USGS site, right? If I understand correctly, you can use the elevation data for mountains, etc? But do you need to have another program, or can you use DEM files with the Route Editor or another MSTS utility? I've tried to sculpt mountains before and it's not working out too well! If there was some way I could get the San Bernardino Mountain range automatically landscaped into the Route Editor, than that would be great!Oh, if I do eventually find a way to build the terrain in a decent way, I'll try to upload the Arrowhead Hot Springs line in the file library when I'm finished. At the moment, I don't have any 3d modelling programs, so I've had to compromise a bit and use buildings, scenery, and objects that "resemble" real structures along the line. Lately, I've seen some screen shots from routes that other people were building that were amazingly accurate to scenes in the real-life routes. Unfortunately, I'm no where near being able to do that :( Instead, my aim will be to just get the overall "feel" to the line and give a generall idea of what it looked like. Also, I've had a heck of a time finding any old pictures taken along the northern portions of the line. If anyone familiar with PE or the Arrowhead line knows of where I might be able to find any photos taken north of 40th Street, especially somewhere near Electric Avenue, please let me know! In the mean time, I'll keep working on the route. It would be great if I could figure out how to use DEM though :)Chris

RE: How do you used DEM files?

You would probably have better luck with this question in the Route forum. In fact, if you do a search over there you might find the information you're looking for.Henry

RE: How do you used DEM files?

Yes, you are in the wrong forum for that question. The only reason that I found your message was that I did a search for "DEM" a while back and had been waiting for an informative reply on how to get DEM data into the route. My search provided no good information, except for links here and there. In any case, yes, you can get all of the DEM data that you want from a site that offers USGS DEM data. I would recommend gisdatadepot.com.The trick is to get the data into your route tiles. Perhaps the easiest way to do that is to download the latest version of DEMEX. You can find links to that in the forums. It works like a charm.
