The F1 looks a great route and a good start for the first of a NYC Subway route. But while I was searcing and downloaded the actvites, one of the route is from Northwood-205th to Flatbush Ave. Northwood-205 Street in the NYC Subway is a BMT B Divison Route not IRT. Then I seen the map that came with the download, where after you leave Northwood it goes to Hunts Point Ave where the #(6) line is. Northwood is the Terminal for the (D) Line. The (D) runs from Northwood-205th Street to Coney Island BKYLN. The South Ferry to 242nd activity is the #(1) IRT route is fine. If someone makes the R62 Trainset you use that for the 242nd SOuth Ferry, cuz the 1 use the R62's. Overall I seen the screens, like I said the route looks great and a good start. I hope you guys can get to make NYC Subway routes.
This is a Brooklyn Bound 5 Express Train, The Next Stop is Fulton Street.
I agree, it’s a good start. I’ve only ridden the NY subway system once in my life, and I was very confused. I guess I’m lucky I survived the trip, and without a map. I have no idea where I ended up, but some nice folks directed me back to my station of origin.I’m sure the route will improve with age. I’ve made a few adjustments to suit my needs. For instance, I’ve started adding 3rd rail where it’s missing. I tried placing the 3rd rail with the Auto Gantry placement feature, but I guess it doesn’t accept numbers less than 10 in the Distance setting. And that doesn’t really matter, because the Auto Gantry gets confused wherever it encounters two tracks, switches, and anything else out of the ordinary. So I started placing the 3rd rail manually. Below you can see my first attempt. Tim Muir created a few 3rd rail pieces for me a while ago. I had intended to equip one of my freelance routes with 3rd rail in a lame attempt to duplicate the Chicago Aurora & Elgin, an interurban railroad in the Chicago area. I didn’t get far with that effort. However, since I have the 3rd rail pieces, I applied them to the F1 route. I had a texture problem with them, I needed a shine on the top of the rail, and thought I could fix it, but I could not. I consulted with Tim, and in a New York minute, he had me fixed up. I will, of course, share any of this with the author of the route when appropriate.
Chuck,Go over the improvements with me and I'll put them in the update. I'd like to get the 3rd rail files you have. Are they available anywhere? Also, do you know where I can get any trolley wire objects. As you probably know, when you combine trolleys with subways you end up having the wires over the subway track unless you can install trolley wire as a separate object.email fredb5@earthlink.net
FYI, the UK FineScale track system includes a series of track sections with 3rd rail already included. They're not really interchangeable with standard MSTS/XTracks sections because of the finescale design standards, but if starting from scratch it would be a great way to make a subway route. The textures would need some work to look more like dirty North American subway tracks, but the support pylons look similar and there should be enough different track sections to get the desired layout. There's a UK FineScale website somewhere, and I think some of the files are available from the UKTrainSim site.Alex Stroshane http://www.trainweb.org/asamtrak911
Alex, thanks for the tip. I went to http://www.trainsimfiles.net/ and downloaded the UK FineScale track. I installed a couple of pieces on the F1 route for a look-see. The are indeed fine scale. The rails appear to be less tall than the MSTS rail, which didn't bother me all that much. But the 3rd rail was considerable lower than what I would expect. That may be the way it is in the UK. But it just won't work for the Island Electric models that are already out. While it might be possible to increase the height of the rail with Shape File Manager, I don't think the 3rd rail will ever make contact With the Island Electric shoe. The UK 3rd rail track comes with an assortment of switches, curves, and changeover pieces, so that the 3rd rail can be switched from one side of the track to the other. The curves can be selected so the 3rd rail in on the inside or the outside. And there are the ramp pieces, to lead the 3rd rail shoe up onto the rail. I'll give them a closer look and see if they can be used somehow. Of course, as you pointed out, the texture needs to be toned down a bit.
I did attempt to adjust the UK FineScale track with Shape File Manager. I thought that the UKFS rail was less tall than the default MSTS rail, but now I believe that it is set lower to the ground, and the rail is actually taller. I scaled the rail down to match the default, then I shifted it up to match the top surface of both rail pieces. Unfortunately, the top surface of the UKFS rail separated from the T section of the rail. This only happened on the running rail. The 3rd rail stayed together. Oh well, back to the drawing board.
Chuck, These shots look great!I would have thought one problem would be the common use of "chairs" on British track instead of tieplates. Looking at the shots though, I see a better suggestion of North American tieplates more then the flat look we now have. They actually look more like ours than they resemble rail chairs... which are really much taller, reaching the bottom of the rail head.Frank MusickMoving America into the 19th Century! www.kelticsylk.com
