The Westchester interurban railroad has been gone now for 67 years, but for the magic of MSTS this railroad rides again!Financed by the New Haven, it had state-of-the-art roadbeds, trackage and the latest single phase AC traction and power distribution. But surrounded by 2 mainline railroads, one its own parent company and the other the NYC, all going through at the time sparcely populated northern New York City suburbs. And thanks to Robert Moses, the 1930's also brought an enormous building program of the nation's first public limited access highway system throughout SE New York State. This all spelled a doomed venture. Here we see scenes repeated many times a day with this under-utilized rail system. A 2 car local stands at the Columbus Ave, Mount Vernon station. The train has just crossed a 4 track steel viaduct and the New Haven line to Grand CentralNext, the train departs the station and enters Mount Vernon interlocking where the 4 track mainline splits into two 2 track branches, one to Portchester and the other to White Plains.Hank

RE: New York Westchester & Boston

Hank, you're well on your way to hitting this one out of the park. Are you working from Arcara's book, or form Bang's? -Phil

PhilI have Arcara's book. Bang has a new book coming out this week which I have on order.Inspite of the lack of track diagrams, I've been able to trace out the main route from what's left on USGS charts. Even on current charts, you can find the cuts and fills the railroad created.Regards,
Hank

RE: New York Westchester & Boston

MikeMy problem is that I have about 5 major routes in some state of incomplete. The Westchester would be the shortest with some 37 miles of track.I need to find someone to create the MU's in the rare Stillwell style. The Stillwell coaches were designed to be EMU's, but railroads like the Erie used the unmotorized 'trailer' version, pulled by locomotives, exclusively in their New York commuter service. Virtually all the stations need to be custom jobs. I've got the signals and the cat poles done. Creating the sections of triangular trolley wire goes beyond my skills. It would be freeware.Regards,
Hank

Hank:Again, I'm amazed at the work being done out there for MSTS. I still have a booklet called "Westchester's Forgotten Railway" by Roger Arcara that I bought in Grand Central Terminal in New York back around 1963. Certainly, don't stop now!Frederick Dreany
