Dave,
Thank you for your comments. The sounds come from the Blackpool 167 by Chris Lindop. Where he developed the sounds from, I don't know. But they are good. I like the gong.As far as turning out more traction pieces, here's a sneek peek at something I've been tinkering on:Wow – image 2
Pacific Electric's "Portland Twelves", and the 1372-1376 class combinations (shown above). It's being built with modular parts so that I could build the coaches (1252-1257,1258-1263 class), the combines, and the boxmotors, too, if feel so inclined. This is about 5 days into it, a couple hours an evening. Cheers

Thanks, for the comment and offer, Marc. I appreciate both! I don't know what you could photograph for me at OERM. There are no "Portlands" left to take pictures of. The only thing that might be helpful, would be a pic of the cab of PE 418 ( "Blimp"), which has the round "porthole" windshields, same as the Portlands had. That would be useful in constucting a cabview, if I ever get that far. I haven't been able to find any cabviews of these cars. Thanks again

Tim:I was delighted when I saw this shot of the PE redcar. These cars remind me of the line of brass PE models imported by E. Suydam & Co.in H.O. scale during the Sixties. I found them very fascinating although I never saw the real thing, being a New Yorker. I'm currently working on art for New York City's less colorful
IND subway car called the R-9, a big olive green thing with
a million rivets.
Tim, all of your stuff is top-of-the-line, sort of like digital versions of those fine brass models.

Frederick, I think the R-9 Ind cars are the ones I used to ride in the 40s.I lived in Brooklyn at the the time. My stop was Fort Hamilton Parkway. Looking forward to your artwork. My Computer specs are in my profile

Frederick,Thank you very much for your comment comparing my work with the old Suydam PE brass motors. I was always drooling over their catalogs when I was a kid. I still have my old Suydam #1360 wood combine, but it's in sad shape.Good luck with the R-9. A million rivets, eh? Good lord, rest those eyes once in a while! Below are current views of the three models being built somewhat together. Wow – image 11Wow – image 12Wow – image 13
The boxmotor will be a real challenge, as it requires some special considerations concerning the baggage doors (the gaps between the windows). Not quite sure about which way to do it. These cars do not have a side texture on the bitmap like most cars. Instead I made a 256x256 map each of a section with one window including half the post on either side, and another map of the steel sheeting below it. I then, in TSM texture properties in part mode, tiled these on the respective car sides multipled according to the number of windows. 15 times across for the combine, 16 across for the coach, while the boxmotor requires sets of 3 and 4 windows on its' widow polys. The same for the sheeting poly below the windows. It will require some special treatment with the side sheets and letterboards around the baggage doors. All lettering is done on separate polys, which will be alpha'ed. The combine door and cab sides are a separate poly, as are the platform sides, which makes these models somewhat modular in construction. All this trouble is in the interest of making sharper textures. Even with 1024x1024 bitmaps, a long passenger car still appears fuzzy in the sim. So, this is just another one of my experiments towards this end. It really has made modeling three different body styles alot quicker to texture.Wow – image 14Well, look to see these out in about a year, maybe(?)...if I'm still sane and healthy.

Tim:Need I say, they look fantastic. Please stay sane & healthy. I've found from doing textured sides of heavily riveted cars that window and door spacings are based on the pixel spacing of the rivets as a guide, following also the initial blueprints as closely as possible. Now if only I had your 3D modeling skills. I'm looking foreward to seeing your PE cars when finished, even if it takes a year. I still can't over how terrific your trolleys are. That California car is a real gem.Frederick Dreany

Fred,Thanks again. Health is better, can't vouch for the sane part. I'm glad you (and Chuck and Mike) like the California car, it's one of my favorites.I'm doing a little work on the "Portland 12's" each evening, and might start a post for updates from time to time.

Someone say R-9?
I've got some pics of R-1 100 and 381, and R-4 484 and 401. I also have pics of R-7A 1575, but that's more like an R-10. But finally the Arnine train has an R-9.
http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?35315
R-9 1802 has joined the train and will be running IN REGULAR SERVICE this weekend and next weekend between 57th Street and 7th Avenue and either Canal and Broadway or City Hall. If you're in town either of those weekends, you might want to try to catch it. I'll try to catch it sometime soon and get pictures (the photoban hasn't been passed ) of the train.
EDIT: I also have copies of the plans for the R-9 subway car, so if you want that, I'll scan it and send it over.

RE: wow

I’m also enjoying the California car, thanks, Tim. I had to adjust to the single control, but otherwise, I did enjoy the new sound. It would be interesting to trace the lineage of this model. I saw a line in the .eng file that said:
comment ( Lights, Paul's adjustments from rear June 19, 2004 )
Of course you and I realize that was Paul DeVerter, and with the exception of a few people, no one else will ever know.

Chuck,Glad you like the car. It was built from Neville's Wanganui tram. I spent an evening "Americanizing" a copy of the original, for the community. I cut and pasted lines from the lighting statements from one of our older cars, a Brill, or some such car, that Paul had done the lights on. I then adjusted the co-ordinates to fit the new car. That's the lineage of this car. It was done after a long spell of inactivity with TSM, and kind of lit the fire of interest for me.Love the screenshot, with the seagull, by the way, and good to hear from you.
