I discovered this board a couple of days ago. It is the best I've ever seen on the subject of traction. I've been through all the scenarios and decided to explore the rest of the desdtop icons. I tried my hand at a simple route and got it to work. Found the tutorial on this site for creating and activity. I would never have gotten thru it so fast without the tutorial. With the board, I discovered all the free downloads available for new routes and stock. I actually installed two the mesaba route that I downloaded off the site and a german route called line27 and got them to work. I got the Chicago elevated, installed it and it works except it always locks up after a few minutes. I think I have a cache problem. There are several questions I have to expand my route creating:I lay down switches and almost always the manual switch operator doesn't install. As a result I can't switch from one track to another. Sounds simple but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.Second, how can I copy objects from other routes for use on one I'm creating. The existing MSTS library is sparse; ie, no station platforms. The cyktrack file I installed for the Chicago Elevated is in the MSTS Library, but when I try to install the sections I get an error "shape failed to load".Can anyone help?Last
Hi Fred, Welcome to the forum. Do you have X-Tracks installed? The Chicago Elevated is very frame intensive. It will bring even the best of systems to its knees. As far as your own route, it would be better to post in the Route forum to get a better response. My Computer specs are in my profile Mike "
Agreed, it does. You really need to lower your display settings in the sim just to make it playable!-BeaverMon, AKA Ben- -BETA Tester for the PO&N Route-
> Second, how can I copy objects from other routes for use on one I'm creating. The existing MSTS library is sparse; ie, no station platforms.Hi and welcome to the fora here. To give you an answer in a nutshell to this specific question: In the section "utilities" of the file library here at train-sim.com, you find a tool called RouteRiter. Without wanting to exagerate, let me just say you must get it when you plan working on your own route, or even when it comes to installing routes of other authors. One very important feature is that it lets you check any route (yours or another author's) for errors, like missing files etc. If available in default folders, it will even cure these errors for you with a simple mouse click. It also has a nifty feature called "Copy shape to another route". You can select all shape files in one route which you want to use in another one, then click "ok" and RouteRiter will copy the shapes with all required files to the second route, and even update the .ref file for you so that you can use the copied shapes immediately.Just to round it off: RR also lets you compact a route, i.e. delete all unused files (sometimes quite a lot, as any route builder installs more shapes and textures than he uses at the end of the day), it lets you compress and uncompress .s, .w and .ace files, it packs up a route for distribution, including writing a .bat file to copy default files over upon install, it zips the route up into spanned zips - well it does about everything but building a route from scratch for you (although it can set up everything for you to start right away...).Lukas a.k.a Swissie
Thanks to both of you for the help. I installed xtracks including the one for route builders and downloaded route riter although I haven't used it yet. I discovered one problem in building a simple route. I have a double track main main line and started a single track branch line. When I test going forward thru the switch without operating it, it works fine. whenever I try reverse the simulator locks up and closes. Likewise when I approach the switch to take the branch line, I operate the switch, it works and then I get kicked out again. When I attempt to set up a path in the activity editor, it won't let me set a point beyond it. For some reason the program doesn't like that path and doesn't like revising direstion. Should I redo the branch line or is there a simpler fix?Any help would be appreciated.
Hi fpbI'm just guessing, but when trying to go into the trouble making direction, do you by chance have any switch left with nothing attached to the side where the switch node (i.e. the red pole) is? MSTS does not like "orphan nodes" at all, you should always attach a short piece of track to the red pole - even if its only temporary while deciding on how the route is going to continue from there at a later stage. An A1t10mstr.s will already do.Similarily, never put two switch nodes end-to-end (i.e. two red poles atop each other). Always separate them by a short section of straight track (as per prototype, at least for 99.9% of cases!). Otherwise you'll be sent/don't sent home for sureLukas a.k.a Swissie
