Where is this?I think trackless trolleys are great! I wish more cities would consider them over diesel busses, which average life span is about 10 years, where-as the trolley busses can achieve 35 years (providing the manufacturers can still supply the replacement parts). The cost savings over this period would pay for the overhead installation and maintenance. And of course, the supreme benifit of clean air versus carcinagetic diesel fumes, and less reliance on foreign oil. I think it's a win-win situation..... just my opinion.Tim

RE: New Trackless Trolley

The only problem is that they are restricted to where the wires run and changing routes is not as easy as with diesels.

There are examples of even scheduled use of this run without wire.
Eg when there are larger construction works of the roads.Dick van den HovenNew Trackless Trolley – image 5

Yes they are in boston I think the company that made them is called skoda. Were also expecting a load of dual mode busses that run diesel and on the wires.

I saw some of those in San Francsisco. I don't like 'em as much as regular trolleys, but they are better than the diesel powered trolley buses (They aren't even trolleys at all! >_< )

It's mighty tempting. My home town, Portland, Oregon, once had the largest fleet of Mack trackless trolleys, which my granpa Smith once drove.

Tim--Is that your Grandad in the small avitar photo? Second, appears Grandma Smith never cashed in on the policy? That is a neat piece of family history. I treasure my one share of stock in the Pennsylvania Railroad (which to my PRR-purist-heart's displeasure was converted to a Penn-Central share), given to me by my Grandad when I was a teenager in the 60s. He bought it for $17.50 and in a year it was worth $98...then in less than a year went...you know... I've never checked to see if it is worth anything as Conrail or whatever, but I'd never want to surrender the certificate--has the Horseshoe Curve with a couple E's pulling a passenger consist meeting a set of Baldwin sharknoses pulling freight. God love our Grandparents.Aloha, Jeff

Jeff,It appears that she didn't cash in the policy, unless this was a copy. I don't think my mom would've given this to me if it was still tender.Actually the avitar photo is my other grandad, Bill Muir, who was also an employee of Portland Traction/PEPCo, and ran streetcars for many years, then busses (but never the trackless trolleys according to dad). Here's the full-size pic it was cropped from, from about 1935 or so:New Trackless Trolley – image 13Your piece of Pennsy stock sounds like a real treasure. Not just because of the engraving ( I am assuming that's the picture), but because it was a gift from your grandad. I sure miss my granpa Muir. Never really knew my granpa Smith, he passed on when I was 6, in 1959.Good to yak atcha,
Aloha!TimTim

RE: New Trackless Trolley

I suppose you could lay two "interlaced" tracks, just below the road surface, to give twin overhead wires, and a trolleybus with two poles, of the pivoting type, discussed some time ago.If MSTS won't allow "interlaced" track, you could lay two "normal" tracks and make the bus much bigger so that the overhead wires are the correct distance apart.Maybe someone might like to experiment ?Eric in UK

RE: New Trackless Trolley

I saw a test done with dual mode track with a 3 ' and standard gauge track sharing a common rail with over head. There was an over head centered over each track, ie 2 wires.

RE: New Trackless Trolley

Hi allIn Athens -Greece, where I live, we have trolleybusses for over 50 years. They came as a replacement ot the trams in 1953. Athens had an extensive tram network that started to decline after the WWII, because the tram fleet was old, noisy and not flexible. Besides that, room had to be made in the roads for the increasing number of cars. So the trolleybusses was the best alternative, because the network was easy to built (only overhead wires)and was flexible enough for the standards of that era. The first rolling stock was 3 axle (1953 - 1954/electric equipment from Gompagnia Generale di Eletricitta -CGE- and body from Alfa Romeo and Cassaro) and 2 axle (1960/electric equipment from Gompagnia Generale di Eletricitta -CGE- and body from Lancia and Cassaro) Italian cars and they served for almost 45 years. These cars were withdrawn around 1995 and almost all of them were scrapped. Russian ZIU- 682 stock enforced the existing fleet from 1977. 75 cars of the latest deliveries (1989-1990) are still in operation. In the years 1999-2000 new Neoplan/Elvo/Kiepe and VanHool/Alstom cars were delivered. In the last 3 months of 2004 N6216 Neoplan/Elvo standard and articulated cars are being delivered. All the above 3 types of cars, are fitted with a diesel generator so they can move in case of problems with electric power supply or to overpass obstacles (road works etc, so common in Athens due to the Olympic games preparation). The trolleybus network nowdays has 24 lines, covering most of the city of Athens and is constantly extended because it is polution free. You can see some pictures of the Athenian trolleybus fleet at http://railfaneurope.net/pix/gr/trolleybus/pix.htmlBUT, after 44 years, trams got their revenge !!! A bright new network of 2 lines, built to serve the Olympic games, is going to start operational service next Monday. The system runs 99% in protected-reserved right of way. The new tramcars are 100% low floor vehicles build by Ansalsdo/Breda-Sirio type (same type is also found in Milan and Naples).

RE: New Trackless Trolley

EEk did you say Breda.. We got some cars over here made by them and they had derailment/wheel profile problems with them for a few years and now they are finally staying on the tracks. I don't think the MBTA will go to them anymore for low floor things. Don't get me wrong they are nice now that they stay on the tracks and work correctly.

Grrrrr....not this again! Read the product title carefully: Microsoft TRAIN Simulator. You know damn well that MSTS does not support buses. Tell MS to come up with a Microsoft BUS Simulator! Geez...no one knows the difference between buses and trains!
