IRT Heritage Sets – image 1

It's Island Electric's first anniversary and we're proud to release two Interborough Rapid Transit 1915 vintage low-voltage subway unit sets. Special thanks to Richard Scott, Jimi Ibbett, and Chuck Zeiler for their audio work to give these units realistic operational sounds.Aloha,Frederick Dreany, Island Electric - East

RE: IRT Heritage Sets

Jeff, Fred,Well, I must say, that these look to be the best yet from IE!!! Love the interior, (and makes me want to return to my Hollywoods ASAP!) The car cards look great, and really make it nostalgic and interesting ( as if it wasn't already). Do the fans turn? Well, I'm just going to have to get these, even if they don't have a trolley pole!Well Done! You've earned the Traction and Subway "E" for this one!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Frederick & Jeff, Every-time you release, it gets better & better. It makes this old New Yorker very pleased. The detail is outstanding.A question: What NYC subway car had the controller on the right & the brake on the left? I seem to recollect the Times Square shuttle during the 40s&50s. I do not know the car type. My Computer specs are in my profile

RE: IRT Heritage Sets

Sounds! Zounds!!! These babies howl, and squeek, and make all the right noises! I find myself dumping the air more often just to hear the brakes squealing, and then to open the controller again to hear the howl of the traction motors winding up. This is really an experience of the senses. A triumph for the guys at Island Electric! We need a stepladder for the passengers in Oregon, and nevermind the invisible 3rd rail! It wont hurt...

Mike:Offhand, I believe that the BMT Triplex sets had the controller on the right and the brake handle on the left, but I'm relying on memory for this and have not checked it out recently.Frederick Dreany

Frederick, Thanks for your reply. I was always attentive to the controls on the various subway cars & trolleys in Manhattan & Brooklyn. In the last years that I rode the systems, they had automated the Times square Shuttle. This was in 57-58 & at that time they still had a motorman as a ride along. My Computer specs are in my profile

Tim--It doesn't matter what Frederick and I build, if you or Chuck Zeiler run it, it always looks better than when it left the shop. And now you know if the fans rotate. Mike--I am not sure which rapid transit unit you may be referring to, hopefully Frederick will know, he's the expert.Alexander, Lukas, and John--Thank you all for your kind comments, you guys are who we build these for!Aloha, Jeff

RE: IRT Heritage Sets

Fantastic work, guys. Reminds me of my younger days when my mother would take me over to the City from Jersey and on the subways. GREAT memories. And you brought them out again. Thanks.I change the Inside View a bit in the first car. Even though the left cabview is out the window, its fixed. I wanted to move it around like I did when I was a kid. Changed it to the following:Inside (
PassengerCabinFile ( LoV_StF.s )
PassengerCabinHeadPos ( 0 2.5 6.5 )
RotationLimit ( 90 360 0 )
StartDirection ( 0 0 0 )
Sound ( "IRT_LoVpas.sms" )
)Puts me right there.(Now I bring/treat my kids and grandkids for a day out on the subways. They LOVE standing at the front of the cars like I did.)Thanks again.

>(Now I bring/treat my kids and grandkids for a day out on
>the subways. They LOVE standing at the front of the cars
>like I did.) I think you're too late for the front window part. All cars on Division-A (IRT) have full-width cabs, and motormen tend to cover up what's left of a window. Division-B (BMT/IND) still has a few cars with windows (R32, R38, R40 Slant (the ones with the 4 ft window), R40M and R42) running on a few lines (A (mixed with St. Louies),B (not now, but possibly after Feb. 22 with <Q> cars),C,E,F (one or two sets among Pullmans),J,L (one set among R143s),M (weekdays only),N (unknown if they will still have them after the 22nd currently with a few sets of R68s),Q-diamond (to be discontinued on 2/22/04 cars may move to B train),R (a few sets among Pullmans),V (occasionally one set with the Pullmans),W (sets of cars from the N tend to run on the W with R68s),Z), but most of those cars will be gone by the end of the decade.

Well, you're in luck. If you come during this year, you are almost assured of being able to ride on the Historic Fleet, ranging from D-types (o/s for restoration) and Lo-Vs (under restoration) to Arnines (R1/9) to recently retired Redbirds. The next trips are February 28th and 29th with the arnines over the Manhattan Bridge (both sides all 4 tracks). Trains leave from Columbus Circle (middle platform) at 10:30AM with a lunch stop at Brighton Beach. Fare is $40 ($20 for children) and all proceeds benefit the March of Dimes. All fares will be paid onboard the train.I just ran these Lo-Vs, and now I'm getting anxious about the restoration of the real thing! I think I just got a taste of what the old IRT was like, from the very start! Now all we need are a few routes of the former IRT!

RE: IRT Heritage Sets

One thing I've always wondered, with the early cars like that, there was a sliding door beside the driver's cabin. First, where did the doors go? Were they "pocket" type doors going into the body, or did they slide on the inside somewhere. Two, how were they opened? Automatic or what?
And Finally, Did the driver's door open too?

RE: IRT Heritage Sets

IRT Heritage Sets – image 27

Yes, the driver's door did open; both sets have the optional cabright view with the door cracked. If you look carefully you'll also see the end bulkhead doors are slightly angled to match the left side bulkhead panel's angle (facing out), they slid in there. You can see the angling from the interior view or the cableft view. I believe some of the units had MUDC (multiple unit door control), but defer to Frederick for a more authoritative answer.Aloha, Jeff Link

RE: IRT Heritage Sets

IRT Heritage Sets – image 28

LAST EDITED ON Feb-20-04 AT 10:13 AM (EST)

Responding to Magick-Maker's question
about the cab doors on the LoVs:The 3 doors on each side of the cars automatically slid into the carbody when the conductor operated the door levers located on the outside of the front bulkhead and in front of the motorman's window.
The conductor would stand on the little platforms also on the bulkhead, and lean out to watch as passengers exited and entered the cars. Naturally this seemed like a somewhat hazardous way to open and close the doors. Unlike in the Redbird RXX models which freatured permanent enclosed cabs, the motorman's compartment in the LoV models was formed by swinging two lighter green doors away from the vestibule walls and connecting them to form a cab. When the cab was not in use, the doors were swung back against the vestibule walls so that passengers could use the space. You might also notice that the front storm door is angled so that it can slide into the left hand side of the angled bulkhead. The motorman could operate the door to his right, normally used by passenger traffic, so that he could open it independently of the other doors to look outside the train or for ventilation during warm weather. Note also that the trucks are of two unequal lengths. The larger one carried the traction motors. Steinway motors (red lines under the numbers) were geared lower to provide more power for going up the stiff grades of the Steinway Tunnel on the #7 Flushing Line route. Steinways were not operated with trailers or with other LoVs such as the Flivvers which are included in this set. Steinways did operate all over the IRT system but Flivvers and their trailers were only operated on the Manhattan & Bronx routes as a rule. If you are making up consists, remember that the trailers are to be found in the passenger cars section.Frederick Dreany

Hi,Though I must admit that I am not a subway fan, especially not when they go under the ground, these cars look outstanding. Both inside and outside. It seems to me that you have done a marvellous job. Thanks a lot for this contribution.Dick van den HovenIRT Heritage Sets – image 30
