Good day, traction friendsin a post date late November 2003, I had mentioned the release of the reworked "Europe2" default route to the 7.2 metre electrified MountE route would not be before Christmas, or probably even in the new year only. I'd like to take this occasion to update you on the current status of the route and the progress made since November. The screenies tell some of the news, but in a nutshell, the "press text" would go as follows:"Installing of Interactive Objects Completed - Beta Test Runs to Begin Shortly on Mount EWe're done with placing & wiring up all the signals, switches, and gates protecting grade crossings, spokesperson says, but some bugs will certainly surface when we begin simulating scheduled traffic on the route. We expect to get down to addressing any such issues in the first two weeks of January. Until then, the test crew will run a few trains and trolleys up and down the hill to test the signalling works, the schedules are realistic, the consists have enough power to tackle the grades, and the motorist on the roads get used to the trains and trolleys and learn where to stop to let them pass..."Here come the screen shots, all but the winter picture taken while testing the first two activities (one get-to-know-the route ride each for the Mainline and for the Interurban) that are in the works and in fine tuning now.MountE Route: Status Report (56k Warning) – image 1

From what I've heard, there will be no "quiet zones" on that route, and some more grade crossings than on its default "mother".MountE Route: Status Report (56k Warning) – image 9

If you are brave and stick to the timetable, then you'll be just in time for a parallel run with the interurban for the two mile stretch from Priestville to Sulphur Springs.MountE Route: Status Report (56k Warning) – image 11

An hour and a half out of Bridgeport, the local meets an oncoming service in one of the tourist attractions along the route, the historic Western Town of "Boghetto's Delight". Don't ask me where the name came from, but rumour among crews has it that the name had something to do with a particular building that was up there in the days of steam trains...MountE Route: Status Report (56k Warning) – image 17

I've been lucky enough to have an advance copy of the Mount E, and it is a fun route! It is based on American practice, but has European flavour, and is very enjoyable, especially the interurban lines which take you through wonderful country. I only wish I could spend more time on it!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

I'm at a loss for words. That is possibly the best juicer route I've ever seen! Can you try to put a third rail on the main line (with the catenary) so that some third rail trains (NYCT, M-1/3) can use the route? If you want the M-1/3 cars, I can probably send it to you in the near future. You could repaint them with an orange stripe on the side instead of the MTA striping.
Those cars are designed for high level platforms, but I don't think it matters.
I can't wait for this route!

RE: MountE Route: Status Report (56k Warning)

Hi Interborough, thanks for the kind remarks I'm currently still busy with putting together the initial batch of activities for the mainline (five are scripted so far, three of which are through initial testing and fine tuning so that they now work ok from my point of view, the fourth is in testing - a return run with some shunting at the far terminal - but needs attention with an issue with the path on the return trip, and the fifth still awaits playtesting and finetuning (bulk fuel freight train uphill, followed by a downhill run on which the two juicers have to pick up some manifest freight in three locations - I sense more need for fine tuning AI traffic and pathes there). That'll keep me busy a bit, and once I'm done with the testing, I want to send those activities to the three betatesters of the route, hoping they'll find some time to check them over, too. Otherwise, the route is basically done, with issues reported by the beta testers being rectified now. At this stage, with all the signalling etc. in, I do not have many options to go back and alter the track layout per se (as this would mean I'd have to delete all interactive objects again before messing with the tdb) - and that also means that I could not exchange the existing track pieces with different shapes (such as the realistically looking CykWorks third rail tracks). The only solution to your quest for third rail ops I could offer is the use of a matching ACleanTrack2.ace such as the ones found in 3rdrail.zip by Island Electric. I plan to offer a replacement "World" folder for the route in which the mainline will look "dieselized", i.e. the world files in that replacement will have the gantries removed along the mainline, and the overhead wire height will be set to 200 metres below the ground. That means for MSTS the route will remain set up as "electric", and with the use of the replacement track textures I mentionned above, you should be able to run third rail juicers without problems. Only set back: the trolley & interurban track will also look to have a third rail, and the wire will not be visible above the trolley tracks, either. Hoping you can live with that quick and dirty solution...
Kind regards, Lukas a.k.a Swissie

I don't really need the third-rail, it would just be nice to have. Tell me if you want the M-1/3 cars-you can find pictures them at http://www.nycsubway.org/nyc/lirr/ (7000 series cars are newer M-7 cars) and http://www.nycsubway.org/nyc/metronorth/ (Harlem and Hudson lines)- and if you want them, I'll send them to you.

RE: MountE Route: Status Report (56k Warning)

Hi John,oh yes, about the models - I'm always interested at taking a look, of course, although I can't promise anything with regard to repainting: First and foremost, I've still got to create the entire roster for the trolleys and interurbans, and I usually have that "idée fixe" about doing a number of different models / types of cars, including some MOW or other exotic goody, different road numbers, variations in colors etc, so we speak about a fleet of a dozen or so different cars for both routes. Then although I've already done the mainline juicers as one of the first things in August 2003, I've got to get back at them some more, as I've received some modified shape files from Island Electric that I still have to implement. And before I release them with the route's activities, I want to try out a few bonus improvements like stable front couplers that don't crash the sim as I desperately need them to work for some of the activities (the fix is not my concept, but I got hinted at a very promising approach a while back), a few more improvement such as warning lights in the cabs, new sounds that are somewhat closer for older juicers than Acela's default whirl, etc. etc...So I've got a long list of to do's and time is always precious, as MSTS'ing around the MtE until 3am wears out a bit after a few nights Please PM me via the link here in the posts, I'll give you the e-mail address there (in those days of spam-bots looking for addresses anywhere, I've become a bit cautious about posting such data - thanks for your understanding)CheersLukas a.k.a Swissie
