I was looking at some of the photos I have in my screensaver and one is a trolley car that sits at the corner in front of the Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City. Trolley Square Mall was created from a large group of old carbarns located on the south side of Salt Lake City. Originally, the mall consisted of a number of quaint little shops and boutiques in an open environment. The interior structure of the buildings was preserved and very visible while you were shopping. At least three of the carbarns were used in this way. There were several others next to the mall that were not open to the public.I was back there about five years ago and the mall had been given a totally modern mall look. New walls and ceilings completely hide the interior of the barns. If I recall, several, if not all of the other carbarns were gone.I am telling this in light of the recent discussion on the demise of old carbarns. In a way some of the carbarns in Salt Lake City have been preserved...but not really.Cal Rasmussen Beaverton, OR (My email is in my profile)Columbia Gorge Route (Phase 1-- BNSF side DONE! Cal, it's interesting that you should bring this up. I posted this in the Route Building forums:....Portland Traction Trolley Barns.........Are rising from the rubble! Thanks to you, and other kind souls, I have been able to begin recreating the ill-fated Sellwood Carbarns, sadly destroyed by developers this last Veteran's day. I got the first test-shot installed today, and it's about halfway done, maybe less. I am using your shots of the interior, specifically the trusses exposed by the wrecking of Stall C. Below is Stall A without roofing. Not a route, just a place to plop it down for testing. Stall A This is going to be a large structure. It covered two city blocks, and had 17 tracks ( by my estimate). (It is a route-specific structure, but I will upload it if traction route deveopers are willing to build around it's stepped arangement.)I thought you'd be interested, Cal. And Thanks!!!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Wow, looks very nice. Huge building... 17 tracks. Any idea how many vehicles it could handle?Tim Frost The Union Atlantic Railroad: Your stuff's important!
I never heard what the capacity was. As a matter of fact, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information on it's history. I've joined 2 oregon trolley Yahoo groups ( http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oregonstreetrailways/)(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/eptchs/), to find out more, and while I've been getting lots of help concerning the Hollywoods and other cars, no one as yet has stepped forward with any history on the barns. It's been a mysterious place to me for 30 years, and sorry it's gone.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

In some places Cal, I believe that you can still see some of the original beams and walls. Being a Utah native, this mall definitely interests me! As a matter of fact, Erik Pierson (century242) of SLW, his wife, and my family and I met there and ate in the Old Spaghetti Factory a year and a half ago. They actually have an old trolley car right in the restaraunt that you can dine in! Anyone ever passing through S.L.C. I would recommend at least touring the building if you don't have time to stop and eat! You can even ride the new light rail right to Trolley Square which would only add to the experience!
It is a neat old structure and I would recommend a stop for a pic or two if you are so inclined.Regards, Erik Pierson Sacramento, Cawww.sacramentolocomotiveworks.com
