Tim:
Streetcars of the "Hollywood" type probably used Tomlinson couplers which had MU capability. Looking at web sites under "Tomlinson coupler" (Google) brings up http://206.103.49.193/boston/htm/bvb041.htm
for one, with a photo of a Boston type 5 and a pretty good shot of a Tomlinson coupler from the front. Some of the other sites have ink engineering type illustrations of HO model Tomlinsons. Best I can do at the moment. Again, it's looking great so far.Frederick Dreany

RE: Pacific Electric Hollywood No.637 - Updates

Thanks Fred. But the Hollywoods used something quite a bit more complex. There appears to be an electrical plug on one side with a matching socket arrangement on the other. But I've not come up with any clear views yet.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

...but still a shot in the right direction, Fred. Getting closer with those couplers. not 100% clear but from the same source:
http://206.103.49.193/pe/htm/pe437.htm
http://206.103.49.193/pe/htm/pe434.htm
http://206.103.49.193/pe/htm/pe435.htm (1st one with the coupler centred instead of swung to the side I see)According to a scaled down, scanned diagramm on www.erha.org, the Hollywoods used a "West. Auto. Air & Electric Coupler" (West. = Westinghouse? Western?) Fred, does it ring a bell by chance, google came up empty with my guesses?Lukas a.k.a Swissie

Hi all,
The PE Blimps Couplers were converted from AAR to Westinghouse Air & Electric couplers, by the PE Torrence shops in 1942, for MU operation.
More info to follow about the Hollywood cars. BTW the Hollywood cars used a carbon shoe on the trolley pole. My Computer specs are in my profile

Still no good 'close-ups' of the couplers, nor controls, nor ends inside yet. But I'll keep searching and wait patiently. In the meantime here it is as of 11-21:

Due to family problems, progress is slow. However I have managed a Portland Traction Co. version while I find out more about the interiors and couplers. The PTC reverted to trolley wheels, and plated over the side doors, and a new paint job, courtesy of PE torrence shops.

You gotta love these Hollywoods!
By the way, those couplers are a stand-in until I get better info. They are a modified Thomlinson-Link design. My thanks to Tim Frost for his kind posting of all the scans from the PE books. They were immensely helpful. As is the help from Jeff, Lukas, Alan, Roy and Mike.
Thanks guys, it's community effort that makes these things possible.Well, back to work!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Pacific Electric Hollywood No.637 - Updates

WOW! Looking great, Tim! If you still need more pictures, I have another PE book that might be of help - "Ride The Big Red Cars." I will take a look and see if I can find anything on the couplers. You can write to me off-list too if you want at gatewaycityca@yahoo.com You know PE is my thing!I'm glad you came onboard the TrolleysCA group too.By the way, if anyone else is interested in California trolley lines, Pacific Electric, Los Angeles Railway, etc. - you should definitely consider joining the Yahoo group TrolleysCA. There are a lot of friendly, very knowledgeable people there, and I learned a lot when I was doing research on an old PE line. Chris T.

Thanks Chris! Tell you what i really need now, is pix of the controller and brake set-up. A good general view of the "Cabview", the end of the car that shows the back of the destination signs and all the details around there. You are absolutely right about TrolleysCA. I've already recieved alot of help from members, and have had alot of questions answered! The same is true for "oregonstreetrailways", another Yahoo! group that has garnered loads of help towards not only the Hollywoods (PTC versions), but many other Portland area traction subjects, and have gained many new aquaintances. It's almost overwhelming the amount of information that is available out there, if you just ask!!!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Loha Jeff!Nothing ANywhere is free! Except the trains here! Actually, as soon as I find out what kind of farebox was used, I'll make it. I have my eye on a Johnson farebox at an antique shop nearby, but it'll be several months before I can afford to pick it up, if it's still there.Timtimmuir@wcn.net
