I have had the Dutch steam trams for a while now, and have been driving them on the various tram routes that I have, Berkona; Linie 27; Atlantic Coast; Laperouse; MCT; and Number One.
The other week i downloaded the Dutch steam-tram route Katwijk Leiden, which I believe is the correct setting for the steam trams.
Wouldn't you know it, it won't load in the sim.
I've tried e-mailing the author, to no avail.
Anyone else tried this route? If so, do you have any advice ?
Ta Muchly
grandpa.

RE: Bit of a problem with a tram route download.....

Hi GrandpaOzhm, I haven't tried that route which sounds promising - ehm, would you mind giving me a pointer as to where it is available. And to your problem: What exactly is the error message (if any) if you try to load it?If the route does not show at all in the list of available routes:- Check if the install.bat has run (if any, but most routes come with one), restart it manually if needed. - Check if there is at least one path in the respective folder. Otherwise run the RouteEditor and create a path yourself (better even several pathes at the various end points and larger stations of the route). - Make sure the folders activities, services and traffic are there also, they can be empty, but are still needed - otherwise you'll get errors when you try to save your run.- If that doesn't help: Open the "your_routename_here.trk" file inside the route folder and check that the route ID name matches the names of the various route files (.trk, .tdb, .tit, .rdb, .rit, .ref etc).- Sometimes the environment files are referenced faultily or have different names than the environments the .trk file points to, typically coming with an error message of "train world initialization failed". Compare the contents of your Env folder with the references in the .trk file.- Use route riter to detect any other problems with the route. For example, a noticeable number of custom objects have faulty entries in the "alternate texture" line in their .sd file, which tells MSTS if the objects has different textures for winter, summer, spring, fall, day, night, snow etc, or miss one of these textures (even the default automobile "car4.s" which has created problems with some routes springs to my mind here). Route riter will list all these problems and offer you to copy the default texture to the subfolders where they are amiss. Hope some of these ideas are helpful to you. Keep us updated on your progress, thanksLukas a.k.a Swissie

Thanks, Lukas, I'll give your tips a go, (if at first you don't succeed, etc.)The Katwijk Leiden Stoom (steam) route is by a guy named Leendert Vooijs, and I'm pretty sure I got it from www.MSTS.nl/Have you seen the new tram by Joseph Spinella ? it's a Sydney Ballast tram, you can get it at www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/here's a couple of shots, anyway........
Cya,
grandpa

RE: Bit of a problem with a tram route download.....

Hi Grandpa Ozthanks for the pointer, really appreciate it. And Joseph's low plank motor is a welcome addition which fills a void in my trolley roster. Actually work crews desperatly need it, as I'm currently messing with the RE in order to add some trolley/interurban track to a revamped version of an existing default route under development (Europe2 electrified & rescenitized into a ca. 1960s North American setting). Aw, what the heck, just two teasers while I'm at it Bit of a problem with a tram route download – image 7Bit of a problem with a tram route download – image 8Lukas a.k.a Swissie

RE: Bit of a problem with a tram route download.....

best of luck with your tram route, looks fine so far...will there be animations? i.e. people, objects, seems to be all the go now.I think I've found the problem with the steam tram route, thanks to Mike's R/R, there are absolutely NO tram tracks ( in 'global/shapes')
I have an idea that I saw a download package of tram tracks somewhere,
can't remember where, though. do you recall it ?Meanwhile, will continue to try to get in touch with the route-builder.regards,
grandpa

Hi Grandpa,
I believe the only place you can find the tram-tracks is at the train.de. However the site is down for a day or two.
Send me your E-mail & I'll send you the file.

RE: Bit of a problem with a tram route download.....

LAST EDITED ON Oct-27-03 AT 07:39 AM (EDT)

Hi Grandpa,hm, those tiles in the city are pretty populated with objects already, although I try to use as many scenery items which combine several objects in one as possible. But the track and road pieces, plus the various poles alone account for several hundred objects on each of those tiles alone (maximum the sim can handle is 1500 objects per tile), and then I still need room to place interactive track objects (signals, platform markers, speed posts), plus some car spawners which will again add to the object count. Not to forget: The tile also has to support some AI trains and the player consist, which, when created in the sim, do IMHO also count towards that 1500 items limit - and which cause MSTS to call home when the limit is exceeded. So the goal I have for the finished tile is to have no more than 1200 scenery & interactive items, so that the sim will have enough leeway for rolling stock and cars on the car spawner. So I have to be very careful not to overload the bandwaggon, also in the interest of frame rates: On a low end laptop I parallely use for testing purposes I can still maintain 8 fps in the city area (13 is the max I get out of that laptop in "empty" scenery), while the high end machine chugs along at 28-30 fps (compared to a max of 56 in empty terrain), but I do not want this to drop further or it becomes annoying to all those not blessed with a high end system. On the other hand, I have thought to get at least some "waiting passengers" into the sim - that's your call, "Heidi", or however her name - but again not on the inner city tiles. RE: Bit of a problem with a tram route download.....

grandpaOut of interest, I tracked down the route and installed it. It ran "out of the box" for me. I do not have any special tramway track sections except for Xtracks in my Global folder.Nice route by the way, I think this one will stay on my HD for quite a long time.mervyn.
