Subway steeplecab? – image 1

After seeing the steeplecabs we already have for train sim, and after my experience on the fan trip last week (pics to come), I was thinking that it would be nice to see a BMT/NYCT steeplecab for train sim. Only a slight modification would be required: the removal of the trolley poles. I am hoping to see lots of NYCT equiptment in the following year, owing to the centennial of the opening of the Interborough Rapid Transit System Subway from City Hall to Harlem. The steeplecabs were bought by either the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company or the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit System, depending on the date. They occasionally run fan trips with D-type triplex BMT subway cars, the last one being last Sunday on the BMT southern Division. Thank's for your consideration.

RE: Subway steeplecab?

It is my understanding that the NYCT steeplecabs also differed in the cabs, in that their roofs, were almost flat, as opposed to the typical arched roofs of the GE steeplecabs of the era. And, of course, there were other minute detail differences too. I could work the cab roof of my GE steeplecab to a flatter cross section. If you have any good pix or drawings, send them to me and I'll see what I can come up with. I recently built a Chicago Aurora & Elgin GE 44 ton steeplecab by request, and it turned out OK.

RE: Subway steeplecab?

A Friend sent me a link to this site, which shows pictures and diagrams of NYCT steeplecabs:
http://www.nycsubway.org/cars/locomotives.html
There are three surviving steeplecabs: the 5, which looks to be a Class-1 "Standard" 40-tonner; the 6, without trolley poles, and the 7 with trolley poles, both Class-II NYCTA Locomotives. These motors differed from standard GE steeplecabs in that they were a foot narrower, and had flat cab roofs. The narrow cab width necessitated the entry doors to be angled back, thus the need for the current model to have a new cab part made to construct the NYCTA version. This I can do. I've already narrowed a copy of the CA&E motor's frame and made the adjustments of the railings and other details to bring in the width to 8'-6" from the standard of 9'6-1/2". I will consider further developement of the 6 and 7 if there is sufficient interest from others to do so.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Subway steeplecab?

Subway steeplecab? – image 8

#6 handles all the fan trips by steeplecabs. I'd love to see #6 or #7 made, as I was on last Saturday's fan trip on the Eastern Division. We ran with #6, 6112 ABC, and N-1. I don't think N-1 was on the following trip, as it did not leave electric territory. I'm sorry to say that the condition of the D-types was horrible. On the relay move to Marcy Avenue, the traction motor on 6112C bottomed out. I don't know if that car is undergoing repairs or if it will run the way it is next year. But what is really needed is a collection of NYCT equiptment for MSTS to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the opening of the greatest subway in the world.

RE: Subway steeplecab?

Well, that's a good reason to build the 6 and 7 ! Notice, I said 6 AND 7. if I'm going to do the one, I might as well do both. The 5 is a smaller unit, and requires different details altogether. The 6 and 7 wouldn't be that difficult to build, and I have most of the parts at hand to do so. And if I can get Chuck Zeiler to help, it will go pretty well. When is the 100th annualverskity anyways?Timtimmuir@wcn.net

The celebrations begin on 10/27, and will last at least a year, ending at the actual 100th anniversary of the opening of the subway (IRT mind you, the BRT did not build a subway for a few years, and the IND wasn't built for a long time). I'm hoping to see everything from the old gate cars of the Brooklyn Union Elevated, to the high-tech R143 cars of the present and the R160 cars of the future. We also need the entire rapid transit system, from the original 9th Avenue Elevated and the Brooklyn, Bath, & Coney Island, to the brand new 63rd Street connection and maybe even the 7 Hudson Yards extension and the long awaited Second Avenue Subway. But not all of that has to be done. 2004 is a year of celebration for New York City and the New York Subway, and everyone should pay tribute.

Plus the 8 (Third Avenue), K (Chrystie Street), T (West End), H (Rockaway), and Subway steeplecab? – image 38 (6th Avenue/Brighton Express) which are no longer running. Not to mention all of the double lettered trains.

RE: Subway steeplecab?

Thanks, NH, for the pic! I always appreciate any photos of traction equipment! However this is the number 5, a 40-ton unit, whereas, I'm working on the 6 and the 7, 50-tonners, slightly larger with flat roofs and entry doors angled back into the cab about a foot.
Subway steeplecab? – image 51
Ignore the patchwork textures, part Oregon Electric, part CA&E.They all originally had trolley poles, but the 7 is the only one with them left on. What I'd really like is either a photo, data, or an explaination of the double couplers ( MCB and Westinghouse-?-), how they were arranged, used, etc. I'm working on the roof today, and then will tackle the interior. ( Anyone know what color they were painted inside?).Thanks.Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Still lots to do: Headlites, pilotbeams, pilot railing and footboards, maker lights ( Just the subway lights)texture tweaking ( adjust the hues and saturations), interior walls, 3rd rail pickups, so on and so forth....By the way, this version of the steeplecab has a lot less polys than the OE #10 in the file library. Lots of re-built parts and some new ones. it is a much better model!Timtimmuir@wcn.net

RE: Subway steeplecab?

It's growing on me. I at first thought it was the ugliest steeplcab I ever saw! But there's no accounting for taste, is there? It's just that I'm used to the likes of the Yakima #298, or the Oregon Electric round-roofs. The NYCTA 6 and 7 are beginning to shape up and the more I look at 'em, the more I like 'em. They have a sort of Lionel tin-plate look about them....Timtimmuir@wcn.net

Well, you have the distinction of building the first non-revenue subway model for MSTS. Congratulations! It looks fantastic! How long have you been working on that? If it has only been a short time, I can only wonder what the final product will look like!

RE: Subway steeplecab?

Thanks, John! I started work on it Oct 4th, at 9:30pm! But I had a head start with the basic GE steeplecab already built. I had to make a new cab, and retexture some of the older OE bmps, resize the frame to 8'-6" wide, a little this, a little that. Still have a ways to go, now with the details. Those really cool winged headlights, the curious square markers, the arched handrailings on the pilots. The pilot beams are even different. These are very interesting motors, and are fun to build.Timtimmuir@wcn.net
