Well, I haven't looked, and I don't plan to be doing so. Early last year, a barge of redbirds left down the Harlem River, only to strike the Amtrak bridge at Spuyten Duyvil, routing one Amtrak train into Grand Central. Maybe the redbirds aren't meant to be retired. I'm sure a few will be saved for fan trips, like the Lo-Vs and D-types. I'm getting tired of the R142 series already. Get new announcements that aren't as annoying. I like the R62 series cars, but only the northbound side of the 3 train has a railfan window. That now applies to all main line IRT trains. Most of the R62As on the 7 train have full width cabs, in other words, no railfan window.OT: Congrats to Andy Roddick on his straight sets win at the US Open today. One question remains: will he be the next Pete Sampras?

"Early last year, a barge of redbirds left down the Harlem River, only to strike the Amtrak bridge at Spuyten Duyvil, routing one Amtrak train into Grand Central. Maybe the redbirds aren't meant to be retired."Hehe, that's pretty funny. I don't know about a couple Redbirds to be saved for fan trips, (except for the one still painted in World Fair Livery) unless www.nycsubway.org isn't paying as much attention to what the MTA is doing with preservation. Yes, the new announcements are very annoying (because the cast of Bloomberg Radio is voicing them .) I was able to get a railfan window on an R62 trainset on the (7) the other day, but I suppose that was only luck. I saw a lot of Redbird trainsets in the Corona Yard that same day (I'm sure many motormen wanted to play with their "new" trains.) I wanted to get a Redbird to ride but they were not going my way. I've seen worse, but I forgot the website. It was a crane wrecking a train.

--You are reading my signature now, don't waste your time reading it!--
Eh, where did my signature go?
Oh, here it is, the one you are reading right now? Can't you see it? I know I know, it is probably too bright to see it.
Anyway, I told you not waste time reading my signature! You have just wasted 10 seconds!

At least the Bombardier cars don't scream when they come to a stop at a station like the Kawasaki cars do. That goes for R142A and R143 cars, and will probably be true for the R160 cars that will number around 1000. They will replace the R40, R40M, R42, and R38 cars before replacing the legendary Brightliners.

"At least the Bombardier cars don't scream when they come to a stop at a station like the Kawasaki cars do."The scream reminds me the train is in the station when I'm not facing the platform edge. What prevents the scream on the Kawasaki cars? Different brake shoes? Softer brake application?MTA Going your way for 100 years. 1904-2004WARNING The Following Photo May Scare You – image 18

Different brake shoes.Like the whine of the AC traction motors differ from the R142 (sounds like three chords from "West Side Story") and R142A (is just plain NOISY), so do the brake shoes themselves.Stuart D. Guberman

Errr, the ones Bombardier built for Toronto's system just in the last few years do, right from the very day that each unit is commissioned into service too. Toronto's done nothing to fix the noisy problem either.http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/Bayou/4804/ a fictitious network serving London, Weymouth, and points in between

That was taken at the Germantown car house in Philadelphia. These cars are part of the former collection of Buckingham Valley Trolley Association, now owned by Electric City Trolley Museum in Scranton. The car on the far left is Red Arrow center-entrance #75, which has been traded to Branford and will be heading there soon; next to it is SEPTA #2647, a standard Philly pre-war PCC; the car on the right is Red Arrow "St. Louie" #15, and the door sticking out from the right side of the photo belongs to Red Arrow #17.

Can you give some more detail? Some Redbirds are converted into Work Cars, which are painted yellow with black stripes that are often used in Maintenance of Way.MTA Going your way for 100 years. 1904-2004WARNING The Following Photo May Scare You – image 21
