RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

If you're referring to mine, I only made two covering the few stations that are completed. I'm gonna get real basic here, not to be insulting but because I don't want to assume everyone already knows all this stuff.This:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/19512.htmlIs a link, you click on it and it takes you to another thread. Within that thread are other links (one for a Raildriver hack for the CTA cars), and a zipfile link. This:http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3f331bd16582126e.zipIs a link to a zipfile. Clicking on that will download the zip, then you extract and install it as if it was something you downloaded from the file library. Since you can post pictures or zipfiles as long as they're less than 100 kilobytes, whenever I make little throwaway things like those activities, I generally post the zip as an attachment rather than uploading to the file library if I can get it under 100kB. No readme, but the instructions are in the thread that the first link takes you to.

Okay I download all the files, Installed Cwcer03.zip and followed the instructions. Now since I am new at this, can you tell me in which folders I should extract; newroads.zip, Cyktrck1.zip, and cta2400.zip.

RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

Which you should extract to is easy, if you don't have a default temp folder just make one. File, new folder, and type in "temp" or "install" or something, then extract the zips to that folder one at a time. Newroads.zip is the hardest since you have to manually copy or move files out of that one, all the other files have automatic installers that you just double click on the .exe file that comes out of each zip, and follow the prompts.newroads.zip
cyktrck1.zip
cwcer03.zipExactly what you need to install depends on what you already have, if you have already downloaded and installed Xtracks.zip then some of these steps can be skipped.
Check the \Train Simulator\Global\tsection.dat file, if it's May 7th 2001 that's the default KUJU file, any file date for tsection.dat later than that and you have some version of Xtracks installed. You say you already installed the route from cwcer03.zip, so you can skip that in the following since you've already done it. I tested this in all the possible combinations, it doesn't matter what order it's done in, so you shouldn't need to uninstall anything you've already installed. If you do not have Xtracks installed, first thing go to \Train Simulator, copy the \Global folder, and paste into \My Documents or someplace where you won't forget where it is. Now if you screw something up you won't have to reinstall MSTS, just delete the \Train Simulator\Global folder and replace it with the backup copy.
Start by extracting newroads.zip to a temp folder somewhere. Copy the \Shapes folder from wherever you extracted it to, browse to \Train Simulator\Global, paste the \Shapes folder, answer yes to overwrites. Go back to the temp folder and copy the tsection.dat file, switch back to \Train Simulator\Global, paste. The message that comes up will say: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 1CHECK THE DATES, do not replace the file if the version you currently have has a later date!
Step 2, open cyktrck1.zip, run the CYKTP1.exe file, that will extract the shapes and textures for the EL and subway tracks to the global folder.
Step 3, open cwcer03.zip, run the CWCER03.exe file. Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 2Note this is the default path, the CER folder is not stored within the zip, so if you click on the button with the 3 dots to browse to wherever trainsim is installed on your computer, you need to browse to \Wherever_you_got_it\Train Simulator\Routes\ and type "CER" after that so you get the whole path,
\Wherever_you_got_it\Train Simulator\Routes\CER.

Next bit is confusing;

Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 3That doesn't actually launch the game, it autoruns the installme.bat to copy the common files from the default routes.

Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 4You should get a DOS window similar to that, opens and copies the default files in, if you see "file not found, 0 files copied", then you either have it in the wrong place or don't have all six routes that came with trainsim installed. The rolling stock is a no brainer, download;
cer2600.zip
cta2400.zip
Open, double click on the .exe files, follow the prompts.

RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

Well, you didn't mention whether you had Xtracks installed for a previous route or not. Assuming you didn't, most likely cause of MSTS not starting is conflict between the default global tsection.dat and the track database in CER.First thing;Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 5To make hunting for these things easier, click on tools, folder options to get this window, then click on view, then scroll down and uncheck the box for "hide extensions for known file types".Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 6Go to \Train Simulator\Global, click on view, details so you get a screen that looks like this. If the tsection.dat file has a date of July 26th 2003 or later, then there's another problem somewhere. If it says May 7th 2001 like in the screenshot above, go to where you extracted newroads.zip and find the tsection.dat file dated 7/26/2003, copy, and paste it into \Train Simulator\Global. Note there are \Shapes and \Textures folders in the Global folder, the .s and .sd files go into Shapes, .ace files go into Textures, the tsection.dat file goes directly into Global, not the subfolders.

If you have the L2 route from a year+ ago in your routes folder you are getting exactly what the readme for the standardized \global\tsection.dat warns about. RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

Well, I think I scared the guy off. I'm going by "Member since Aug-25-03" in assuming he don't have the old L2 route, and also there are good odds he didn't have Xtracks 3.7 or the build 00020 installed prior to downloading L2_0.3. What I should do is whack together some kind of batch file, the installation process for L2_0.3 isn't what you could call newbie friendly, mostly because of newroads.zip. Previous users of Xtracks can figure it out, but if it's the first add-on route he's trying to install it can be a beast for someone not experienced with Windows Explorer. What I have found is that having any route based on any version of your standardized tsection.dat file installed with the default 5/7/2001 KUJU tsection.dat causes conflicts, sometimes the route just don't show up in the menu, other times trainsim won't even load until the Xtracks/Standardized tsection.dat route is moved out of the \Routes folder, or the standardized tsection.dat file is installed. One thing we often tend to forget, guys who have been playing with computers for a while unzip a file and look at the stored path, and we know the tsection.dat goes in the root of global, and if the .s and .sd files are stored loose in the zip we copy into the global\shapes folder, if they're contained in a stored \shapes folder already we just drop that into \global, yes to overwrites. Computer newbies don't know all that intuitively, so they sometimes end up with
\Train Simulator\Global\Global\Shapes\Shapes\tsection.dat, which is obviously not going to overwite the default properly.Stamper, if you're still there, don't be bashful, we were all new once. Any luck with that yet?

RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

Hey now, I want to remind everyone that L2 v0.2 pre-dated any attempts at standardizing the tsection file! When I was working on L2, I emailed Okrasa, and asked him if he could tell me about 100 # that he wouldn't use for Xtracks. When he replied we agreed upon the 800-900 block. Later, we figured out all the stuff about dynamic track assignment and other things. (I believe it was a conflict with PO&N.) After that the standardized tsection and Xtracks were bumped, it just took the L a while to catch up.If I knew then what I do now I would have issued a simple update or patch. Problem is, soon after L2 0.2's release it was shelved for a time. By the time I picked it back up recently, I was concerned with v0.3.-Chris

RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

"conflict with PO&N.", yuk-yuk. Took me a minute to get that one. "The general idea is that you don't want track or roadway shape files in use in ANY route that are not defined in the \global\tsection.dat file."Isn't that what I said? I wasn't knocking standardized tracks, just trying to point out that having a route in the \Routes folder (unless it's trainstored) that used the standardized tsection.dat during creation without having the same or later version active in the global folder can cause problems, since MSTS was programmed by a bunch of idiots to load a whole bunch of stuff it don't need yet on startup."There can be any number of issues, the most spectacular is the old L2/standardized file blow up where you don't even get to select a route before the sim crashes."I've seen that same thing with some Xtracks routes, sometimes the conflict with the default tsection.dat just causes the route to not show up in the menu, sometimes it prevents MSTS from even starting. Sometimes the sim will start and even load the route, you just get bombarded with error messages. Again, the cure is;1. Don't have any routes based on the standardized tsection.dat installed, or
2. Install the standardized tsection.dat to make the routes based on it compatible. What Stamper said;"MSTS wont start. it starts up, gives me a title, then goes back to the windows desk top."Sounds like a conflict with the default tsection.dat, altho that could be system specific. I just now tried it, copied the CER folder from the backup into \Routes, and I currently have the default 5/7/2001 tsection.dat active in global. Nothing happened, sim loaded normally, but the CER route didn't show up in the list of driveable routes. With the Hoboken Shore/N&JC route I sometimes got that, sometimes it just locked up if the standardized tsection.dat wasn't installed properly.I can't think of what else it might be, if the CER route won't run something isn't installed properly.

RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

Chris,No attempt at blame or anything of the kind. At the time, the L2 solution was probably as good as anybody working alone was going to come up with. The reason the problems it causes with the standardized file remain so firmly in mind is that I was beta testing that version of L2 at the same time I doing the initial development of build 00001 of the standardized file and then all of a sudden I couldn't get MSTS to run long enough to get to the route selection screen. Wondering what kind of monster I had created tried all sorts of things, eventually removing all routes but the tutorial. With the sim working, I started adding them in and found that it was L2 that caused the trouble. When I put the L2 entries into the standardized file and ran Horace on the L2 route all of the problems went away. In their infinite wisdom, kuju has the sim read the global tsection.dat file and the track databases of all installed routes before allowing you to select a route. When conflicts are found there are a variety of results.Sniper,I was emphasizing your points more than arguing with you. But the intent, for the general user at least, is that changing from the default tsection.dat file to the standardized tsection.dat file is a one time thing, not a regular occurance. Always one in every crowd that has to be difficult about it. David Beach.Palouse & LewistonChicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 9

Hey Sniper,Hey man sorry I cut out on you, but I had to leave town that night and I just got back. Just to let ou know, I am not new to computers or Windows. I am just new to dealing with the route bulding of MSTS. I just like to drive them. I did get my MSTS going again, I put back the oringinal tsection.dat in my Global Folder. I was noticing that you and dave was talking about and old L2_03. Well I only have L1 which came with Roundhouse. I put all of the files where you told me to put them, do not see the L2 or Cert in the route activity selection. Where do we go from here.

RE: Chicago L2 vo3 Activities

Had to leave town, hey? Hee-hee, not gonna ask why! Menu selection should say "Chicago Elevated Railways". If that don't show up, something is still wrong."I put back the oringinal tsection.dat in my Global Folder.", the L2v0.3 route is like any Xtracks route, it's not gonna work with the original tsection.dat file.Thing to do now is check all the paths for the correct files.\Train Simulator\Global\tsection.dat, date should be July 2003.\Train Simulator\Global\Shapes\L1t10mstrt.s
\Train Simulator\Global\Shapes\hwy2l2wna40r22-5dnp.sYou should have a bunch of files in that \Global\Shapes folder starting with L1t and hwy, if they're not there find out where they are and put them there. The only other thing I can think of that might prevent the route from showing up is if the bat to copy7 common files didn't run. Check that you have the default USA1 and USA2 routes installed, then go to \Train Simulator\Routes\CER\, find the file named installme.bat, and double click on it.

Yo David!

I actually saw this this morning, I was waiting to see what David had to say. MSTS won't start that means something is still conflicting. 7/26/2003 is the correct build 00020 of the standardized tsection.dat file, I have no idea what 12/15/2002 is, probably a previous version. One step at a time again, if you don't have it now download Xtracks.zip from the file library, should be version 3.7, and install that. Move all the routes except the six default routes to a backup folder and see if MSTS will start. If it won't, then there's another problem somewhere. If it will run Marias, NEC, or whatever without errors, move the CER folder back into \Train Simulator\Routes and try again. If that does work without errors, then one of your other downloaded routes is causing the problem, next step is to move each of those routes back into \Train Simulator\Routes one at a time, and test to see if you can run that route before moving the next one in. Might be helpful if you could give us a list of what other routes you have.

RE: Yo David!

No idea what 12/15/2002 might have been, build 11 was 12/2/02 and build 12 was 1/6/03. There is a route that conflicts with the /global/tsection.dat file. Make a new folder (holdroutes for example) and move all of the non-default routes from \routes\ to the new folder. Try to run MSTS; if it works add the routes back in one at a time and see which route is the problem; if MSTS doesn't work with the standardized \global\tsection.dat file and just the default routes, there is something fouled up in your basic installation (and there are too many possibilities to even begin to list them).David Beach.Palouse & LewistonChicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 10

RE: Yo Stamper! Who keeps changing the heading?!

I dunno, first question is what was wrong and how did you fix it? Somebody else might have the same problem two months down the road.Framerates, yeah, this route requires serious horsepower just to run at all. I start the sim, click on options, advanced display, and turn off all shadows and specular lighting. For really heavily detailed routes I'll turn the visibility slider down a bit.Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 11I have a P4 2.66ghz with an ATI Radeon 9700 pro, so those settings work fine for almost all routes. The L2 route tho, requires even more to get playable framerates.Chicago L2 vo3 Activities – image 12That's a workable compromise, visibility down to the lowest setting, and the world objects and train objects texture quality reduced to 2. Still gives pretty good looking detail up close with playable framerates. If you have a low to midrange system, you'll probably have to go further than that, maybe even lowering the world objects density to 6 to get rid of the roads and moving traffic on the expressways. The thing to do is fiddle with the settings until you find a compromise you can live with, or buy a faster computer.

RE: Yo Stamper! Who keeps changing the heading?!

Looking at your settings screenshot, does an X in Specular lightting mean it is on or off. It seems without the X means Specular lighting is on.
But without the X for overhead wires, precipitation, seems it is off.
Anyway, do you get errors when changing the resolution, then save, then select a route. I've got Send/Don't Send errors for two computers when I change the resoultion, then select a route to play immediately. The last time, I even got a parent Track Moniot missing or something!

RE: Yo Stamper! Who keeps changing the heading?!

No and no. An X in the box means it's turned on, that applies to almost anything to do with computers, including file and folder options in Explorer. And no, never got anything like that when changing resolutions. One wierd thing I do sometimes get is the warped image, for example if I set to 640x480 when I haven't tuned my monitor for that resolution. In another thread somewhere Marc Nelson was saying something to the effect of the sim don't do 16 bit properly, and will actually run better and faster when set to 32 bit regardless of the screen resolution.

There's only one activity included with the route, and it has an incorrect header since the route ID was changed at the last minute. The one activity included with the L2 route don't work, so try the two I made, in this;http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/User_files/3f331bd16582126e.zipBTW, Chris "Elvis" Cyko, the guy who made the two versions of the Chicago Elevated, lives in Memphis, but was originally from Las Vegas. Don't think they had a monorail back then, last time I was in Vegas (1987) I didn't see one.

Probably there's something wrong with my M$TS. I crashes after changing the resolution and I never got above 59fps(while you people get 60fps )regardless of detail settings on two computers, a 667Mhz and a 2.53Ghz.

Eh, where did my signature go?
Where has my favourite LUL train gone? Maybe it was sent for bolt checking again...
