There will be the 102 also. But here is the 101 with a new coat of paint, and interior:

This is a collaboration of Matt Austin, Fred Huntley, and myself (textures). This may also grow into a CERA-type box trailer. Tim

RE: Progress Pix on Mesaba 101

Hey gents,
Make sure this one has more power than 103-104. Those two together couldn't get up some of the grades with two flats, two boxcars, and the hack.

RE: Progress Pix on Mesaba 101

That's odd. The horsepower of the 101 has been reduced to 240hp (down from 400hp in the 103-104), per your earlier reply to Tim. I better do some tests. What grades do you recommend? What rolling stock are you using?

RE: Progress Pix on Mesaba 101

LAST EDITED ON Jan-04-03 AT 09:20 AM (EST)

The worst grades on the Mesaba Electric are 3% going up to the top of the bridges. These grades are all "compensated" with slow increases in the grade approaching the top, and the 3% is never more than 100m long. If you have the ME route, go straight ahead from the normal start point without throwing any turnouts, and it stalled on the bridge over the DM&N going into North Hibbing. The consist was 103/104, the CLE flat, two PEPCO boxcars, an L&PS box car, and the new ME caboose.

RE: Progress Pix on Mesaba 101

Dave, I was unable to reproduce the stall on the grade. Here's what I did.I made a consist of the 104-103, a PEPCO log flat (empty), two PEPCO boxcars, a L&PS boxcar, and the Mesaba caboose. I headed for Mitchell Siding (I was also testing Sound Regions I placed there), pulled into the siding and stopped ( to be sure I was not using accumulated momentum to conquer the hill). Then I pulled out of the siding, never exceeding 20mph, headed up the hill. At the steepest part, I had the throttle at 88%, and was gaining speed. Now, I noticed that my versions of the 104-103 have 800 HP, so I'm going to download the versions that Tim put in the Library and test them. They may have different HP.If, in the meantime, you would like to increase the horsepower of the 104-103 yourself, open the MesExp3.eng (#104) and MesExp2.eng (#103) files in Wordpad, scroll down to the Engine section, and below the Smoke statements is the horsepower setting. You can change the number in parenthesis at MaxPower to a larger number. DieselSmokeEffectInitialMagnitude ( 0.4 )
DieselSmokeEffectMaxMagnitude ( 0.4 )
DieselSmokeEffectInitialSmokeRate ( 0.4 )
DieselSmokeEffectMaxSmokeRate ( 0.5 ) MaxPower ( 800hp )
MaxForce ( 145kN )
MaxContinuousForce ( 135kN )
RunUpTimeToMaxForce ( 5.0 )
MaxVelocity ( 40mph )
MaxCurrent ( 700A )
WheelRadius ( 0.4191m )
Sanding ( 20mph )
NumWheels ( 4 )

RE: Progress Pix on Mesaba 101

Dave, in relation to this query, I'm wondering about the 101 and 102 being used as locomotives. The link and pin couplers lead me to believe that they never handled interchange freight. Do you know if Mesaba had their own freight cars that these motors would pull? The fact that ME never had a caboose also makes me wonder if these motors were used only by themselves or together. Together these motors as a team will go up the steepest hill on my Portland Traction, 5.3% from a dead stop at the foot of the hill at 25% throttle. The HP setting is at 240.Below is a current pic of the 102 and 101 on the PT just after the hill test. Cheers!Tim

RE: I Think I Can, I Think I Can, I think I can.....

Well, I tried the same hill today with the same train, and no problems... maybe it was the weather, but I alway run in the winter on the ME. According to my wife, the snow is usually gone by July 4, but returns shortly after in that area.As far as the couplers, I have a bit of a quandry. I know they MU'd the box motors with the passenger cars, but they also used them for the short distance from the DM&N interchange to the shops.BTW, the smoking motors look great...can you make that happen when the amperage exceeds a certain level?

RE: I Think I Can, I Think I Can, I think I can.....

Glad to hear they work OK in the Summer. I hadn't thought about testing in the Winter. I'll try it.I downloaded the Library version of the two box motors. They are at 800HP. They went up the hill OK. Then I downgraded them to 240HP. They went up the hill OK again, albiet slower (4mph) and with the throttle at 50%. Above 50% throttle, they would gain speed. I'll try it in the snow.I suppose that the traction motors could smoke, but you only get one setting on smoke intensity and color, which would be the same as the coal stoves. And it's really an all or nothing proposition; that is, they either smoke, all the time, or they don't. The adjustments available are for the magnitude, based for the most part on the throttle setting. I could make them smoke more at a higher throttle setting, or at idle, and the coal stove would do the same thing. I'll fool around and see what I can do. But I think the end result is that the motorman is gonna get fired for frying traction motors.
