Boston Type 6 LRV Uploaded – image 2

I finally finished a two month project on the TYPE 6 LRV. I decided to spend the time to create new LRV Cab files as the PCC ones just didn't seem to go with the newer LRV. It comes with a consist of one, two or three in MU operation. I used the original doors as delivered as that is the way I remember them. Thanks Matt for the start.Engineer1008

RE: Boston Type 6 LRV Uploaded

Looks great. Thanks for sharing this.Just a little nitpick: This is not a Type 6. Every Boston "Type" car is unique to Boston. The LRV you have here is the Boeing-Vertol car. The design was shared with San Fransisco's Muni. There was a Type 6, but it died in the planning stage when the US government went on a "buy USA" kick and encouraged Boston and San Fran to go in together. Thanks again,Al

Are you referring to a National numbering system or Boston's ? Boston has been numerically numbering them in sequence since Type 3 and 4 cars in the 30's. An example is the Breda car which is a type 8. If you have more detail I would like to hear it for my own info.Engineer 1008

RE: Boston Type 6 LRV Uploaded

Thank you for your efforts in making this car available. The car would be certainly a "de facto" type 6 although I never heard of it referred to as such. The Kinki cars were named "Type 7" and the Bredas were "Type 8" but as far as I know, the Boeing-Vertol cars were referred to just as "Boeing-Vertol". I guess the MBTA was not completely happy with them as much as they were with the "Type 7"s from Kinki Sharyo, which truly are good looking streetcars in the traditional sense. Anyway, they've been a part of the Boston scene for some time now and are still in operation as far as I know.Frederick Dreany

RE: Boston Type 6 LRV Uploaded

I'm referring to Boston's numbering system. The PCC cars were not given "Type" numbers, nor were the center entrance cars. I think what makes a Boston car eligible for "Type" designation has to do with the extent of "home" involvement with the design and specification of the car and the extent to which the car is specifically a "Boston" car. These two factors can be nearly the same. Before work began on the Boeing car, Boston transit engineers were developing designs and specs for a Type 6 car. There is the front end of a mockup for this car on display at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. I've seen the mockup and heard that it was in fact to be the Type 6. All plans were scrapped when the US government, a significant source for funding, urged the use of a car to be developed in the US, to be - for want of a better designation - the US LRV (or something like that). Boston had been looking at the same time at the Canadian LRV, known as the CLRV. I have postcard showing the CLRV running on Boston tracks during trials. The Boeing car, like the center entrance and the PCCs, was a generic car with certain modifications for Boston (such as the inclusion of air conditioning). The car was a near total disater in Boston, where the last ??? many of the original order were refused, instead going directly to Muni. The already-delivered Boston cars were overhauled and put back into service, but their maintenance/repair requirements have been high. They are being phased out prematurely, while the aged PCCs on the Ashmont-Mattapan line are still in service. Over ten years ago I wrote on article for Railfan & Railroad describing the M-Line and its PCCs. The best info I had at the time from the T was that the PCCs would soon be retired and be replaced by the Boeing cars. Instead, the PCCs were again rebuilt and are still going strong, whereas the Boeings are being phased out.Somewhere in my piles of trolley literature I have an article detailing the whole sordid story. Maybe I'll be able to find it if anyone cares. Also, the Boston Street Railway Association is the best general source for Boston transit info.Having said all this, I still like the appearance of the Boeing cars and am delighted to have them available for MSTS.Cheers,
Al

RE: Boston Type 6 LRV Uploaded

Just so you know, my own version of the Boeing is on the way, probably within a few weeks. I've basically finished the exterior modeling (also modifying Matt Harter's model) and have begun work on an interior. I have also gathered photos and sketches to make a passenger view and cabview. The doors are animated and I am getting the windshield wipers to work as well. Once I release the first version, I will rebuild the doors to the older style and release an older MBTA version as well as a MUNI version.Alex StroshaneBoston Type 6 LRV Uploaded – image 6

RE: Green Line

The Green Line route will include the entire system in its present form, as well as the now-closed A (Watertown) line, Arborway line, and the surface-level North Station stop. However at this point I have only gotten as far as a few hundred meters past Lechmere, as I'm required to build shapes for the viaduct and elevated trackage as well as for the stations. It will be a long time before the route is released, unfortunately, unless someone else is interested in helping me with the specific models while I handle the rolling stock and Route Editor work.Doesn't help that I've also resolved (for the new year ) to finally get started in my pursuit of traction modeling in HO scale. In the past two days I've about reached the halfway point in my kitbash of an MBTA "Wartime" PCC, slated to wear the "Grey Ghost" paint scheme.I've seen your website before and I enjoy the collection of photos from various photographers. However my primary resource for MBTA photos is www.nycsubway.org , since in the Historic section of the MBTA photo gallery there are over 550 photos of PCCs, mostly from the collection of the great Joe Testagrose. One could spend many hours browsing through them, noting all the different variations of details and paint schemes on the PCCs.Anyway, to answer your question, yes. Pictures are getting better and better. Looks great. Like the center piece and the animation. You must be a patient person.I dont like to do interiors as in real life you cant really see much of the interior from the outside in the LRV's due to heavy tinted windows and I'm not that patient. I would try various transparency levels rather than clear and that should make it nice.

LRV Too Realistic??

I am piloting my LRV on the Chicago "L" route 1st release the closest thing I have to Boston right now, and out of the blue it leaps of the track. I have run the Jap. series 2000's and the Chicago cars many times but this never happened. Now I know the "real" LRV had problems derailing but isn't this putting in too much realism? Seriously a great model and kudos to the hard work to make it happen but has anyone else had derailments? Thanks!Bob

RE: LRV Too Realistic??

Hey there..Derail is turned off...I was running the Blue Line....a 3 car consist. I may try a single car and see if it works. It ran a little jumpy (screen rates) but that may just be the detail of the model
