These cars, 2400 series CTA cars, are very beta. I'm currently preparing to scrap the original .s file, in favor of a one piece body. I have one copy of the test file ready to upload, but it's not finished. (Obviously) Anyone want it for kicks and giggles anyway?

dead on scale size.Though, they are sunk about two inches into the rail heads. However, I believe that if surrounded by finished trucks, the size wouldn't seem so small. Their actual size is something in the neighborhood of 28" diameter. Odd size I think.

RE: Does anyone want these before I scrap the .s file a

Oh, before I forget, The reason I built the model was to kill time while I researc the first baldie. The 2400 proved a good test bed to see how things would work and flesh out. If anyone decides they want this thing, they're welcome to it, but by saturday I'll have scrapped it and started over. (it's a mess to begin with)Baldie wise, I'm digging up as much info as I can, Though there's not much in the way of pictures.

cckyo, I started on the baldie today. Mis skinned it but ah, I can fix that. I'll have you a beta model ready for testing in a few days I scrapped the 2400's (save for the ace file) and figured I'd rebuild from the ground up.

RE: Does anyone want these before I scrap the .s file a

Oh, one thing I have to ask. These cars are basically interburban street cars modified to run off a third rail aren't they? Plus, if anyone wants it, i've a set of highly detailed old style trucks I'll be uploading (the gmax scene) for other builders to use.

RE: Does anyone want these before I scrap the .s file a

Don't know about them being "interburban street cars modified to run off a third rail."What I do know is more historical, since the first time I rode the Chicago-L was 8 years after the last 6000s were retired, and thus have only ridden on the HP series cars w/exception to the 2000s.This is what I know...The cars are 48 1/2' long
12'-3" over the roof.
Width 8'-8"
Wheel diameter 34" for motor car.
Wheel base 78" " " "
Truck base 33'-8"
7000lb without passengers.
GE 243 motors (unable to find hp) (I would imagine 4 of them)-Chris

CTA 4000s and 6000s

CTA 6000s (and 1-50s) would be better characterized as "Rapid Transit Cars built and designed to use recycled PCC streetcar components". The cars (grey & silver & red white & blue) referred to in the first message are, at least to me, a representation of 6000s. Most 6000s had PCC trucks with a wheel diameter of 26" and 4 55 HP motors (a few experimental models had 28" wheels and 4 100 HP motors, which current generation L cars have today).CTA 4000s break down into two categories, "Baldies" and "Plushies". Baldies have three sets of door on each side of the car and iron roofs free of trolley poles or roof walks, hence the name "Baldies". There are only a few preserved, one is at Union and another is at Fox River Trolley Museum. These were in service until around 1964. I remember seeing the Skokie Shops full of Baldies being scrapped when coming down the hill on the Skokie Swift in 1968 or so. The cars you are referring to are "Plushies"."Plushies" were in service until 1973 and perhaps are best remembered being in Evanston Express or Ravenswood service. These had two doors on each side and roofwalks, vents, and trolley poles, and were not "bald" in any way. The car (brown and orange) pictured in one of the messages is a "Plushy". All 4000s, except for the very first order of Baldies, 4001-4066, were motor cars. All powered 4000s had only one "power truck" and had two different sizes of trucks, the heavy, motor end had a 78" wheelbase truck (2 motors, 34" wheels) and the unpowered truck had a 66" wheelbase (26" wheels?). If you look closely at the picture in one of the messages, you will see it. Even the trailers had two truck sizes, evidently for the possibility of future power. I don't see the horsepower listed anywhere, for purposes of simulation, I would start with maybe 150 HP. These were slower than 6000s and were heavy, weighing in at about 35t. 6000s were more like 27t. "Baldies" had concrete floors. 6000s had plywood floors. All steel carbodies in all paint schemes are listed in www.chicago-l.org. Some of the drawings are better than others, but at least the site is fairly complete.
