RE: Reskinner needed for Chicago L 2400 Series project

Kurt,Not sure if I'd call myself an expert on shiny metal textures, but that could be helped by specular lighting anyway. I think I'm good at creating textures from scratch, see the attached sample of one I'm making for an MBTA Boeing LRV. I might even say that I prefer to start from scratch as opposed to working with something someone else drew. I like to work from photos, but I do not make textures out of them. Instead, as you might be able to guess, I create them pixel by pixel, from the ground up. Kinda like train gifs, but on a larger scale.Alex StroshanePrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 3

Hello Alex! The roof textures from the MBTA LRV look like it has the perfect effect that I'd want on the CTA 2400s.If it would not be too much trouble, could you do a wavy metal texture as a sample for me? The wavy metal effect on the 2400's red and blue front panels are rather prominent - take a look at this photo:Previous Topic | Next Topic – image 6
( From www.Chicago-L.org )The reflection of the shop's roof shows the imperfections in the metal around the routelights the most - kind of like the effect on a brand new CB&Q E8....Sorry for being so picky, but since I'm doing it for someone else, I want to make sure it is perfect!Take care!KurtEdit: Link fixed

RE: Reskinner needed for Chicago L 2400 Series project

Kurt,I thought I knew of a tool in my painting program that would make it very easy to add those reflective patterns, but I couldn't find it. I must be thinking of Photoshop, which I learned at school last year but don't have at home. I am trying to get a copy from a friend though. I can definitely remember using that tool to add reflections to the side of a small boat in a river. For now, I did draw up this sample texture of the front end of CTA #2423. I didn't add the class lights yet, and I haven't gone down as far as the anticlimber, but this is the basic front end, and I think I was able to add enough shading using normal methods so that it looks pretty realistic. You mentioned the gradient effect on my MBTA Boeing texture, so I used that effect in a couple of places here: on the area just above the anticlimber, and in the red and blue panels. The effect on those is pretty subtle, but it basically gets a little lighter as you move toward the top, which adds some dimension to the image. I was also able to get the center door to look very good, including the shadows cast by the cutout that surrounds it.I did discover an effect in my painting program that can add a wavy ripple to an image, and the amount of ripple is fully controllable. I might be able to use that to create a wavy section and then paste it into this image. Or, I can just hope that my friend will have the Photoshop CD for me in the next few days.AlexPrevious Topic | Next Topic – image 7

HIRED! I'll be sending along later a .bmp that'll give you an idea about the textures and how I plan to map this thing (no need for window lines, the windows are built-into the model).GTG!Take care!Kurt

nhtrain2 is looking for someone to make the textures for his Long Island Railroad M7. That would also be a good car for a Gif.
See Grand Central: LIRR: Photo Gallery for all the LIRR photos you'd need. This is as close as to a straight on shot as they have.
