MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar – image 2

As promised the well known TYPE 5 Streetcar from Boston's MTA was uploaded. Using Matt's basic body design I had to delete a lot of detail to make it MSTS compatable. Bogies and trucks were replaced due to high detail. Lighting and Cab design were also added. Put a few of these in your car barn. You can ride this actual car at Seashore Trolley Museum in Maine, I do ever year.

I think the next will be the Type7

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

A beautiful job on the type 5 streetcar. Boston fans (yes I'm guilty on all counts) will love this one. I simply love the cab. Almost like riding in the real thing. All we need is Kinki's type 7 and we Boston fans will feel complete.

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

George, I really like your cabview! It's a lot of fun. Were these cars really this quick on the get-up-n-go? I mean, I just cracked the controller and zoom!!! Off she went up my 13th Avenue line climbing the grade like it was the Bonneville Test Flats!
Well, anyway, it's a fun car to drive and thanks for making it available.
Here it is on the funeral-car siding at 13th and Bybee on the PT.

You probably have to tweak the engine file a little as I set it for the Japan electrified route and there was a steep hill at the end that it wouldn't climb. The cab could probably be adapted to other streetcars also. I notice that the trolley pole doesn't reach your wire. The only electrified line that I had, other than the NEC was the above mentioned line and the pole reached fine. I could make a model with a taller pole? I have the 3DCanvas files if anyone cares to create an interior or other mod. I dont plan on any further work on it.To answer the other users question about con-builder, I have no knowledge of that program and use MSTS editor for my consists. Perhaps someone else can help you there.I forgot to thank Tim Muir for the sound files which I started with and hacked around with to come up with a little different sound.
The new Oaks looks tempting and I am going to try it out.Engineer 1008

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

An interior would greatly enhance the quality of this car. I hope that someone can find time to consider making one for this fine model of the type 5. Matt Harter's web site shows the model with some sort of interior.

When I load conbuilder, it says there is no "Engine(" line (or something like that) and the train cannot be loaded. -------------My favourite LUL train-------------

Hi,The well know ConBuilder bug.
Put an empty line in the .eng file just above the Engine line. That part of the .eng file should look like this one: Sound ( type5eng.sms )
) Engine ( type5I also put that ( type5 to the left.Dick van den HovenMTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar – image 13

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

LAST EDITED ON Nov-06-02 AT 10:34 PM (EST)

I made the ConBuilder modification, plus a couple more. The original Extended Shape Definitions file (type5.sd) looked like this:SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0t1t______

shape ( type5.s
ESD_Detail_Level (0)
ESD_Software_DLev (0)
ESD_Alternative_Texture (0)
ESD_Bounding_Box ( -1.253196 2.355933E-02 -11.00146 5.689773 5.106586 15.49602 )
)
Which produced a bounding box of generous proportions.
MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar – image 15I changed it to this:SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0t1t______

shape ( type5.s
ESD_Detail_Level (0)
ESD_Software_DLev (0)
ESD_Alternative_Texture (0)
ESD_Bounding_Box ( -1.253196 0.5 -6.0 1.253196 5.106586 6.6 )
)
Which produces this:
MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar – image 16Also, I used the brillsnd.zip patch (intended for Tim Muir's brill51.zip and Frank Roberts' connbril.zip) for the Sound folder. I just renamed each .sms file (brillcab.sms, brilleng.sms, and brillpas.sms) to type5cab.sms, type5eng.sms, and type5pas.sms respectively. The Type5 does not use a passenger view sound, but I renamed it in anticipation of some nice person making a passenger view for it.

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

I've noticed that the brakes are rather sensitive. Can anything be done to add more air flow, etc. and have a better stop at stations. It seems when I set the brake to approach a station, I run out of air, and consistently overshoot the station. I'm open to suggestions.

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

ROFL! I qualified on one of these at STM, about two decades ago, and the brakes are downright sudden when running a nearly empty car! What we did - and I've found this works well with the KiHa DMUs, for example - is to make a heavy application and hold it until the car is down to a crawl. At that point, release it completely, and make a minimum application to stop and hold the car. This is tricky to learn, at first; but proves to be a very precise method of stopping a car, once you've got the hang of it... -Phil

RE: MTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar

Maybe I'll paste in some of the values I came up with for Matt Harter's PCC. I got the brakes to act like those on an LRV, at least, since I haven't gotten over to Mattapan to see how an actual PCC rides. Now it's like stopping a car, you can do a light application and coast to a stop, or slam it into emergency and stop in a few yards. It mainly has to do with the maximum application rate and maximum brake force. I also modified the maximum release rate so that there is almost no recharging time before you can take off again.I modified the controller, too - I got some values from the Series 7000 so that the brake "pedal" now has notches instead of being a continuous percentage type. You can get it into emergency very quickly by just hitting the key several times. Releasing is just as easy. After all, it doesn't take the driver forever to lift their foot off the brake pedal.Alex StroshaneMTA BOSTON TYPE 5 Streetcar – image 18
