I've been asked to re-paint my ALCO-GE into the Number 298 of the Yakima Trolley Museum. I've started on her by removing some of the Portland details and began adding YVT details and UP paint ( a bit faded since UP donated the 298 to the city of Yakima in 1985). Still got a ways to go, but the paint mapping will be friendlier to repainters.
Here she is after two days' work.Tim

"Here's one we assimilated earlier..." Nice, very nice. I like the level of detail you've gone to, with grabrails etc. Seems like the yellow suits that lil'un quite well.

RE: Yakima (Washington) Steeplecab 298

Thanks, Gary, and here's a more recent view from this afternoon. I've got some beautiful builder's plates from the Yakima Museum, but everytime I try to convert the model after placing them on the frame, I get errors, and I can't understand why. It's very aggravating, cause they are copies off the original 298, and you can read all the fine print. But, I'll figure it out, if it kills me!!!Cheers!!Tim

Tim,
With all due respect to your great models, GET BACK TO THE ROUTE! I'd like to be able to run another U.S. traction line, instead of the European routes.

RE: Yakima (Washington) Steeplecab 298

Dave,
What route? Oh, THAt route! Believe it or not, I'm still plunkin' around on it, when I have time. But I've got to build the models that'll run on it too. Also, the work I'm doing for the Sumpter Valley Railway, and the Yakima Project.
There is a special reason for the Yakima motor. It's basically from the need for a correct cabview for the ALCO-GE steeplecab, that the Yakima 298 came into being. I asked for, and am getting, assistance from the secretary of the Yakima Museum in procurring these cabviews, and possibly the correct sounds, from their Original YVT #298 GE steeplecab, (On the property since 1922), with the possibility of the finished product to be used for training purposes. All that's been asked for in return, was to have the original Portland Motor re-painted to YVT 298. I've gone one better, and am building a dedicated 298 for their purposes, and for free uploading here.Well, that, as they say, is that.

RE: Yakima (Washington) Steeplecab 298

Hi Wally,
Thank you. Until we get the cabviews with all the controls, and the sounds developed, this motor won't be ready for uploading. I don't have a release date in mind, as it's early days yet. And I've got the Portland motor I'm working on also. They will probably be released at the same time, the Portland motor being painted as PEPCO 1409 and the Oregon Electric's No.10, as they were both originally Willamette Valley Southern Motors. I'm also thinking of doing up a North Shore version. The route is one I've been tinkering on for several months, based on the Portland Electric PowerCo interuban lines in and around that city in Oregon. It's just an experimental route, actually. I've got a DEM'd version in the planning stages, but track data is hard to come by for the old interurban.Cheers!!Tim

RE: Yakima (Washington) Steeplecab 298

Beautiful! I have an O-scale model of this from Q-Car. These steeplecabs were also used by the Springfield (Mass.) Armory and one of the NYC subway lines (I'll have to check to see which one, though I suspect it was the BMT). The Springfield version was black with yellow front end diagonal stripes in its later years. It generally ran at night, pulling several tank/box cars through the streets of Springfield. The BMT version was slightly different as modeled by Q-Car.Cheers,
Al

RE: Yakima (Washington) Steeplecab 298

Thanks Al,Yah, I wanted one of those Q-car steeplecabs, about 10 years ago. I still have the flyer from Quentin that has some pretty good basic information in it, including the BMT version, which were slighty narrower and had a flat roof, originally built for the South Brooklyn Railway in 1906, a very early example!
Cheers!Tim
