There are some really great steamers (American Practice) on the forum. However, having operated mainline prototype steam, I notice the whistle sounds are much too subdued, from both outside and inside the cab. That steam whistle is really LOUD! Wnen running fast in MSTS you can barely hear the whistle over the sounds of the engine. That is not prototypical. I have run engines where the head end crew needed ear plugs to protect their hearing from the whistle. I run with my sound sliders full up so that is not the problem. The sounds in MSTS are like what you would hear ten coaches back from the engine.I would like to suggest one of you sound guys might research this and come up with a prototype volume. You have done a great job on the correct pitch and sound of the whistles but really they are much louder than any in MSTS.I am not criticizing anyone, just trying to give a little info from experiance.Dave
Dave the actual problem is that most of the samples (Freeware - the Payware guys have resources we don't) involved do not have near enough volume and when we try to "goose it" we wind up with clipping and distortion....Chuck Schneider Chief Cook, Bottle Washer and (Virtual) CEO
I have found that the Amplify Lite feature in Goldwave does a good job of boosting horn sounds without too much distortion. Not ideal, but it is simple!
UHHHH So where do I find this Goldwave program! Obviously I am not a sound person! I have some cassette recordings (somewhere) that I made about 12 years ago from the cab of a couple of engines that have some decent (very loud) whistle and cab sounds. I don't know if they are of the quality anyone needs but you are welcome to them if anyone wishes. Most are of an 0-6-0 originally from (as I remember but can look up) an ex Virginia Blue Ridge RR hand bomber that I was either firing or running when the recordings were made. These were made while pulling 5 Passanger coaches on a tourist line.
