I often listen on my radio scanner and have noticed that when a train crew (BNSF) wants to contact the dispatcher, they play a long tone (sounds simmilar to pressing the number one on a regular phone). I was wondering if anyone has a recording of this tone? Matt Doti
I might have what you're looking for. If you're interested let me have an email address and I'll send you the clips I have to see if they're what you're after?
They are standard DTMF (touch-tone) tones. Generally, the crew calling the dispatcher will enter a 2-4 character/digit code to "ring" the appropriate dispatcher. If the crew has entered the correct tones for the dispatcher district on the repeater they are accessing, the system will answer back with a tone to indicate this. Of course, the dispatcher's console will show that someone is ringing him/her from that repeater. UP uses a virtulally identical system with only slightly different protocols.
