The lead locomotive is normally inaudible because the sound is drowned out by trailing units. I have noticed that sometimes the lead unit will actually be very loud under certain conditions, for example staring an activity with multiple streams of engine sound. I love and think it's much more realistic. Why? You can actually hear the train! If you want to hear what I'am talking about, create a consist with 2 SD40-2's followed by 2 Dash 9-44CW's followed by 60-80 autoracks. In the game, bring up this consist in MSTS. Go to the #2 exterior view, press and hold down the horn button and press the Ctrl key to leave the horn on. With the horn still on, go to the very last car and then go back to the lead units and the sound will be very loud, but the sound will revert back when you go to an internal view or the #3 external view. Is there any way to modify the SMS file or possibly the soundcfg file to do this upon startup every time?
