I set this aside a while ago but I'm determined to figure this out. I have no external sound in any leading locomotive of any consist in MSTS. I do have internal sounds (cab.sms) but nothing external (eng.sms.). If I focus on the second locomotive in a consist, I can hear the sounds from the leader, but not if I focus on the leader. This is true for any and all consists that I build. I have all of my sound sliders maxed and a pretty powerful system. It is true for all routes I have. This just *happened* one day while I was reinstalling some routes. Never had a problem before. Here is what I have done to try to fix the problem:Reinstall MSTS several times....same problem.Borrow **another copy** of MSTS from a friend and install it on my system...same results. Still no external sound on any leading loco in any consist...both MSTS "stock" and ones that I build from a large variety of locomotives I have purchased/downloaded over a long time.I'm stumped. Any suggestions from the sound gurus out there? Thanks! James
Hi Jim,I don't know if this will help you or not, but I had somewhat the same problem a while ago. Everything was fine until I had to reinstall MSTS one day and after that I couldn't hear the horn on any lead loco when I was outside. If I went a few cars back, everything seemed OK, but when I got to the front engine all I heard was birds singing and babbling brooks. Inside, I could hear it fine.I found it, but it took a long time. What it was turned out to be in the speaker configuration setup of my sound card.I have a Creative Audigy Gamer sound card and a 5.1 speaker system. Only I don't use the speakers too much as it disturbs my wife. Mostly I use headphones - which was where I noticed the problem. One day, while troubleshooting this, I happened to hook up the speakers and Bingo, there was the front horn! Plugged the headphones back in and it disappeared.Turns out I had to go in to the speaker setup and turn off the center channel (Set the speakers either to "stereo" or "Headphones") option in order to get it to work OK. Everything works fine now, except I have to remember to change it back when I use the speakers. The real funny thing about this is that until I reinstalled the sim, I never had this problem before. It only cropped up after I reloaded it. Go figure???Maybe this will at least give you an idea of where to start -Larry Steiner

Larry,That's fixed it. Many thanks! Makes me realize what in important part of the MSTS "experience" sounds are. I need to beef up my sound system. I have a fairly new Dell with a Creative Soundblaster Live Series sound card. My speakers are just generic stereo speakers with a bass woofer (I think). I get a lot of "fuzz" and vibration from the bass when I crank it up to get realistic sounds from the loco engines.Do I need a better sound card? You mention that you have a "5.1" speaker system. What is that and would my card run it? Thanks again.James
Hi Jim,A "5.1" speaker system means that it has 5 surround speakers and 1 subwoofer. Mine is from Creative Labs and I got it about a year and a half ago from CompUSA for just over a hundred dollars. It has 2 rear speakers (right and left), and three front speakers (right, center, and left). There are three connections from the subwoofer to the sound card and the 5 surround speakers all hook up to the woofer. It's not a top of the line system for that price, but hey, it sure does shake the house when I throttle up those big diesels!Since you have a later sound card than mine, I'd certainly think your card ought to support a 5.1 speaker set. Look in your instruction sheet (I forgot - Creative Labs has $hit for documentation!) or get on their website and see if it says there. At any rate, I'm glad your problem is fixed. Drove me nuts until I stumbled onto what was causing my $%@@#& horn not to blow!Take care- Larry Steiner
