Problems hearing AI locos – image 1

Why can't I ever hear the AI locos that pass my train? I'm guessing it has something to do with the .sms files but I'm not sure. What's even stranger is that after the mute locos pass I can hear the frieght cars they are pulling perfectly (they sound great too with the sound add-on from 3D-Perfection). I seem to recall that way back when, I used to be able to hear the AI locos but this was using the default Dash9. I'm now using downloaded locos and their sound. Any suggestions? RE: Problems hearing AI locos

check the sound lines in the .eng file to see if there's a *eng.sms in there someplace. You still won't hear them as well as the lead loco, but you ought to get some play with them.

Yes there is a ***eng.sms in the sound section, as well as a ***cab.sms. The locos are drivable as I use them for other activities as the player loco. Does this matter? Should I have special AI locos? I'm not sure what the problem is and I've checked the older postings and none seem to answer my question. All I know is I can't hear AI traffic trains locos, but I can hear their frieght cars. Problems hearing AI locos – image 4

AI locomotives use scalability group 0. If there isn't a SG0 group in the sms file called up by the AI engine, you will not hear it. If there is a SG0 entry, and you still can't hear it, you might want to check the parameters in coded in that group. Regards,

Here's the SGO line, it didn't transfer that great, but I hope someone can find the problem.

Matt,
Find X_FDL.wav and X_GE_Chug.wav and move them to your global SOUND directory (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Train Simulator\SOUND). Then, edit the scalability group in question to read as this:Skip( **** ******************************************* **** )
Skip( **** MOdified Copy of Generic Diesel SMS Used for SL 0 **** )
Skip( **** ******************************************* **** )ScalabiltyGroup( 0
Activation ( ExternalCam () Distance (100) )
Deactivation (CabCam () PassengerCam () Distance (100) )
Streams ( 1
Stream (
Priority ( 4 )
Triggers ( 4
Variable_Trigger ( Speed_Inc_Past 1.0 StartLoop ( 1 File ( "x_FDL.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Variable_Trigger ( Speed_Inc_Past 10.0 StartLoop ( 1 File ( "x_GE_Chug.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Variable_Trigger ( Speed_Dec_Past 10.0 StartLoop ( 1 File ( "x_FDL.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Variable_Trigger ( Speed_Dec_Past 1.0 ReleaseLoopRelease () )
)
VolumeCurve(
SpeedControlled
CurvePoints ( 3
0.0 0.0
10.0 1.0
50.0 1.0
)
Granularity ( 0.05 )
)
)
)
)
)See if that works for you. The 50 and 49 figures are FAR too high as you'd be well over 100mph before those wavs actually kicked in. Since I use a different method for AI audio I never really looked at the default MSTS code for AI audio. Having looked now I can see quite a bit wrong with it. Not only are the speed figures too high, but there are two too many triggers in there that effectively cancel out previous triggered commands. MS for ya I spose.

Move the text "CabCam ()" from the Deactivation ( ... ) section to the Activation ( ... ) section. Then you will hear the sounds from the cabview of your locomotive.Jeff

RE: Problems hearing AI locos

HiAny loco, driveable or non-driveable can be used as an AI loco in a AI consist.There is less system overhead if an AI specific version of a driveable loco is defined and used but it's not mandatory. For the driveable loco to be heard when used as an AI loco, scalability group "0" would be necessary in the sms file.The main difference between driveable and AI only definitions is the AI uses no xxxcab.sms or xxx.cvf definitions.GaryG

RE: Problems hearing AI locos

Hi Matt,I had exactly the same problem: could hear the freight of the AI, but not the AI engine; in fact the only AI train I could hear properly was the flying Scotsman, and (after some considerable while) it dawned on me how to solve the problem: WHAT HAS THE FLYING SCOTSMAN GOT THAT THE OTHER TRAINS HAVE NOT GOT?
Answer: A. its own aliased Cab and Sound folders WITH WAVS--not just sms files--sms files on their own in the train's sound folder could be responsible for no AI sound.I hope this helpsMike Michael Sinclair

Interesting conclusion, but it shouldn't matter. If you look in fscoteng.sms and scroll all the way down to ScalabilityGroup 0, which is where the AI audio code is, you'll see that the wavs listed there are not in the Sound directory for the Scotsman. a_s_comp1.wav and a_s_comp2.wav are both held in the global SOUND directory, along with the other AI wavs for diesels and electrics. As long as the code is right, and the aliasing has the correct path, everything should work ok (note that if you use these default AI wavs listed under SG0, you do not need to alias at all. The sim will look into the global SOUND directory if they are not in the locomotive's sound directory). Also of note, during my experimentations with sms files, for all of the stuff I have done (Dekosoft, 3DTrains, SLW) I have found that if you do, indeed, make an error in the sms file, but MSTS does not know how to interpret that error (such as an extra parenthesis) anything after the error will not be read. So, if there is an error in the coding above SG0, well, no AI audio. I have also found that priorities can be extremely tricky, especially if the sms file is more complex than the default sms files. While probably not practical, especially on a route with many sound regions/sources, I ended up going through and setting all streams to the highest priority of 6 to get past any hiccups that were occuring if I left the priorities at a lower value. Because of the many weird happenings that MSTS is known for, giving any AI unit its own dedicated sms file is a much more reliable method than using SG0 in the drivable loco's sms file. Regards,

RE: Problems hearing AI locos

Problems hearing AI locos – image 15

After getting the help and some ideas from you guys I experimented with different settings in the SG0 line. And finally I got the sounds to work. And now they are fantastic. All I did was remove all the lines (triggers) except the first one, so now it reads like this; (I also made the cabcam and passengercam audible as well)ScalabiltyGroup( 0
Activation ( CabCam () ExternalCam () PassengerCam () Distance (500) )
Deactivation ( Distance (500) )
Streams ( 1
Stream (
Priority ( 4 )
Triggers ( 1
Variable_Trigger ( Speed_Inc_Past 1.0 StartLoop ( 1 File ( "../../Common.Snd/GE_FDL/x_GE_Chug.wav" -1 ) SelectionMethod ( SequentialSelection ) ) )
Now the sound is always playing no matter what the loco is doing. It is great to sit at a siding and wait for an AI train to pass you by making a whole bunch of noise, with chugging diesels, an invisocar with a horn blast, and the sound add on from 3D-Perfection for the freight cars.Thanks for all your help, and I hope this will help others who run into this same problem.
