Using the link below you can download a small zip file, containing a modified genfreightwag4.sms file and a wave file. Make a backup of the original genfreightwag4 file! Move both files into your main sound folder. Now start up an activity and when there's an AI train passing you with wagons that are making use of genfreightwag4 you tell me the difference. Preferable here, this topic Good luck!Richard.click here

RE: Want to test this?

I tried it, but didn't hear much difference. Then I exchanged the "ScalabiltyGroup (0 " in the original genfreightwagx.sms with your "ScalabiltyGroup (0 " , and I could hear the train rumble, rattle and screech as it went by.I also changed the orginal Activation/Deactivation parameters to:Activation (ExternalCam() CabCam() PassengerCam() Distance(100))
Deactivation (Distance (100))so that I could hear them within the cab.I'm no expert on the SMS, so it was just a matter of luck that I hit on something that seems to work.

RE: Want to test this?

Could well be, I uploaded the wrong sms files at first. Do you have the modified gendieseleng.sms (look into either of the genfreightwag*.sms and see if there's this entry at the top; Skip( **** Generic Diesel SMS Used for AI Diesels **** ) )If it's not, maybe you would like to download the file again? The modifications I made are just a test, do you think it improves the gameplay? (if it works? )regards,
Richard.

RE: Want to test this?

Hi Richard,Yes, I did have your latest files, but it was moving your values for "ScalabiltyGroup( 0" into the original "Marias Pass Wagon Type x" files that really seem to work better. The "Freightwagon.wav" file adds realism certainly, but to get the full effect, it seems we need the other ScalabilityGroups as well.Changing the Activation/Deactivation parameters also seems to add to the effect.Speaking personally, I do think that the changes add considerably to the 'ambience' of the simulation. If you are familiar with the German Railroads routes -- particularly Rollbahn and Werratal, you will have noticed they achieved a similar improvement in ambience. When using the rolling stock they provided, you could really hear that train of hoppers (for example) go rumbling and screeching by. Still, I never got around to looking into their sms files. There have been some additional freight sms files uploaded to train-sim, such as DTTX.sms, clicker.sms and x_refrige.sms which also seem to have benefited from the alteration of the Activation/Deactivation parameters now that I have made those changes. Perhaps that is the key point. (In other words, it seems to bring the sound of the wav files 'closer' to the cab.)Regards

RE: Want to test this?

I'm a so called follower of German Railroads, I've got everything they produced so far. And that's where I got the idea from as well.
They are working with Johan Riffel, he created those sms files for German Railroads. His approach was (and is) to give each group of wagons their own 'prototypical' sound. Those wagons have their own sound folder as well in contrast with the default wagons which get their sounds from the main folder. But in essence you could give each group their own specific sound this way. You're right about the Activation/Deactivation parameters, but it must be noted that MSTS is also limited in sound resource handling, the same as their light count bug. And too much waves could crash the sim. Thank you for at least giving it a try, feel free to comment on it and if you discover something please post it as well. I'm going to give it a try to contact mr. Riffel to see if he's got some useful tips on this matter. That's a nice thing of this forum, creating something for and by the community.Regards,
Richard.

RE: Want to test this?

Hi Richard. I too tried your sound track files and thought they helped the al trains alot. I am going to keep them as they at least took the ghost train effect out of the activities. I didn't change anything as I am not very confident in changing things in files. Thank you for a great effort.Greg.

Hi Greg, I'm glad you like it. But I came up with yet another approach. Not very different though, I just changed the original sms files and added a few more wave files, from the creator of DZUG.zip here in the file library. With permission of course So here's my question in general;Who wants to Beta test these files?
