I met the same problem when added distance-controlled horns for my AI locomotives. It should be muted at distance 700 and loud at distance 100 but in reality it is equally loud at any distance So I made 2 versions of .wav file, decreased volume for the distant horn in sound editor.
Ken,I feel your pain! I've put this on the back burner for a while myself.... Got too frustrated with it..... The only thing I've really been able to make work right in SL0 are the speed related triggers playing separate wave files and the constantly playing "stuff" like vents/blowers....Chuck Schneider (Virtual) CEO North American (Virtual) Locomotive Works
What's the track sound mean? Does every car have it's own instance of track sound? Or only the track nearest you have sound? And what's the distance mean? Distance from car to view point or track to view point??And does you actually verified "The starting and ending distance part worked"? I mean 400 is a long distance, may be you can set it to 1 and see does it still work?
The way it works is that if I'm sitting in the cab and an AI train comes by on another track (does not have to be the one nearest me) when it's first locomotive is 400 meters away I begin to hear the track sound. It continues until the last car is receding 400 meters away from me still sitting in the cab of my locomotive.I experimented with various settings and 400 meters seemed to stop the sound while the train was still visible .... you could set it to a diferent distance if you prefer.krswen
The issue is to do with the Stereo() command. When this is used then the Streams of the sms are allocated to 2D buffers, not 3D ones. Hence there are no 3D effects, which is why Distance triggers don't work, but Speed ones do. You can see this happen in the Sound Test Interface.Personally I don't use the Internal track regions for AI train sounds. Instead I have Activated CabView and PassengerView in SG0 of the external track regions.Stuart
I fully agree with Stuart. To be more exhaustive, You have the best results if You use SG0 only in ...eng.sms, ...ex.sms (track files) and the various external wagon sms (GenPassWagmodern.sms and so on) files, and if You activate there all Cam types (CabCam, PassengerCam and ExternalCam). This is near to the opposite to what MS has used within its original .sms files, and is one of the reasons of the poor sound quality of the original MSTS files.Carlo
