I beleve were all getting sick of hearing the same post again and agin about "How Do I Change Horns?" and "My Sound Dosent Work" and "My Horn Is Too Quiet".
Whell, Ill just answer them now, and you can ask the questions later.Soo, Lets get down to buisness,Question One: How Do I Change My Horn?
Answer: There are two Basic Ways, One is to go to the Sound folder of the engine you want to change, and Look in the Sound Folder. IF There is a sound called X_Train_Horn1 or whatever, Rename it X_Train_Horn1OLD and Copy the horn sound you want, It will say (probally) X_GP38_Horn1, Rename it to X_train_horn1. Same goes for the Train_Horn1 sound file, copy the gp38_horn1 sound file and rename both. (the horn files might not be named the same as this exapmple is, so always check!).IF There are no sound files, just .sms files, OPEN them with Notepad (or wordpad) (for the internal sounds it might be: gp38CAB.sms,for the external sounds, it might be gp38eng.sms)Look where the horn sound files are listed (example: ..//..//gp38//sound//x_gp38_horn1.wav) change all files named for the horn to ..//..//Train//Sound//X_Train_Horn1.wav same goes for the internal sounds. ALWAYS back up your files!IF there is no sound folder, open the .eng file with notepad and look where BOTH .sms files are located, and change them to trainCAB.sms and trainENG.sms. Create a SOUND Folder IN the trains main files, COPY the gp38eng.sms and gp38cab.sms from the Gp38 file (in your Trainsim/trains/trainset directory)to your newly created Sound file, put thoes in there, rename them trainCAB and trainENG, and use the same method as listed above.
I will post more info Later.
Later,
Greg

RE: Basic Guide To Changing and Fixing Sounds

That is not the way I do it.What I do is copy the horn wav files into a common horn folder. There should be one in the common.snd folder if you have used NALW sounds. If you used the new Deko sounds from the UP Pack, there is a horn folder in the Deko_common folder. Make sure that each of the horn files (x_ and the other wav file) has a unique filename, most do.I then edit the ***cab.sms and ****eng.sms files to point to the new horn sounds. use the search function and search for horns, it will take you to the three lines that need to be edited. Change the filename in the kine line to the new horn file name. Click on the SAVE AS and give it a unique filename, I use the type horn so that it is easy to edit the eng files later. Do NOT forget to add the extension, .sms, when you save or it will save as a .txt file.I have a unicode text file, called aliaslines, that I create an alias line for that horn sounds. What I do is copy the alias line from an existing eng file (I use one that used the original sms file I edited) and paste it into the text file and then change out the .sms file name to the new one. I then copy and paste this into the eng file to alias to the new sms file. Then you do not need to create a sound folder in EVERY engine folder.Aliasing guide:
