Tim Muir and I have made a big woodpile to fuel up Sumpter Valley's woodburning engines. Since I have already made custom sounds for the water tank, I figured on doing some wood loading sounds for this pile. It is in the sim as coal tower fuel point. I'm having a devil of a time with the sound. Got some great recordings, tossing a pile of old 2 x6's around. No matter what I do, the sim seems to ignore the ctower sms, and play the water filling sound, then the spout up sound. There are 3 tower sms files, ctower, dtower and wtower. I'm starting to wonder if there's a glitch with the ctower. I've got the sms file, modified, and the 3 wood sounds in the route sound folder, and it's ignoring them. On the other hand, it's not following the script for the wtower sound either, as it doesn't play the spout down sound. The original ctower sms pointed to the coal sounds, but also played the water sound. The only way I can get the wood loading sounds to play, is if I substitute them for the water flowing sound! This is not acceptable, as then, taking water is very strange. I made a sound source and put it in the woodpile, with distance set to 10, so you only hear it when you are right at the woodpile, but as soon as you hit "T" to fuel up, the water sound overwhelms the woodloading.Any ideas?

RE: Coal tower sound problem, MSTS Glitch?

I would suggest using the Sound Test Interface to find the problem. It will let you know whether the sim is loading the right sms files, which wav files are missing or in the wrong folders, and also which streams are being played for all loaded sms files. Instructions on starting the STI should be here somewhere if you do a search.Jeff

Well, a cool woodpile like that definitely needs the correct sounds.Since I really have the only the slightest clue about how the sound engine in MSTS works, I can really only give a guess.Maybe it has something to do with the scalability? Perhaps there aren't enough streams to play your wood loading sounds? The fact that you can get it to play properly by replacing the water sound leads me to believe something like this must be the cause.Unless, like you say, the trigger has some sort of bug associated with it.-Jeff

RE: Coal tower sound problem, MSTS Glitch?

I have come across routes that do allow correct playing of Water and Coal towers, so I don't think your problrm is an MSTS bug.The three tower sms's you mention should be listed in the routes .trk, something like this DefaultWaterTowerSMS ( wtower.sms )
DefaultCoalTowerSMS ( ctower.sms )
DefaultDieselTowerSMS ( dtower.sms )I have experimented a little with these and it appears that you can only have one sms association with each of the tower types for each route. Same for Crossing and Signal.

I forgot about that sound test gizmo. I played with it a while back, never realy found a use for it, now I don't know where my notes are that tell how to open and use it. I'll have to do a bit of digging and see if it will help.Since I've played with sound in MSTS for about 2 years now, I'm pretty familiar with the way things work. Since others are getting sound from it that is proper, I must have a glitch somewhere, and I'll go through all of it again. All I can think of is that I made a simple, but stupid mistake somewhere!

I've checked everything over and over! Now I suspect that, since the woodpile isn't animated, it plays a default when you hit the T key. Looks like we are stuck with water pouring while loading wood, oh well.

Steve,Have you tried giving it some sort of animation? Could even be something inside the pile that is not visible, but provides the animation needed to get the sound to follow the animation.David Beach.Palouse & LewistonCoal tower sound problem, MSTS Glitch? – image 1

Tim is the one doing the modeling. I'm just the texture and sound flunky! We decided it wasn't worth it, he's doing the dredge now, and we'd like to get this thing uploaded. Details are killing us, and we both get easily sidetracked into them.
