I'm still hacking away at John Fowlis' 0-8-0 switcher, gonna make a career out of it if I don't quit milking the job. I noticed in Fozzy's D&RGW K-36 the chuff-chuff shuts off when the regulator is closed, on most MSTS steamers it's geared to speed or something. Coasting down a hill with the regulator completely shut shouldn't have these things rappin' the stack at a frantic pace, but until I tried the K-36 I thought it was just one of those MSTS things you had to live with.In simple terms that an idiot like me can understand, what exactly do I have to change to get the chuff-chuff controlled by the regulator?

Shirley you jest

I've never been able to get into the file library at UKtrainsim, not sure why. I did register a few times and got an Atomic Systems thingamy, but for some reason the passwords I get don't work.

Shir, Surely!

Yeah, I can take up to 9mb, hit me with it.
jwarde@ameritech.netI think I've found the secret by studying the differences, instead of the normal "speedcontrolled", Fozzy's has "Variable1controlled", which I'm guessing variable1 is the regulator setting. I'd just go ahead and steal his for a template, but it's got like 58 triggers in the first stream, I don't need anything all that complicated. I kind of wonder sometimes if some of these ultra realistic add-ons don't cause problems by themselves, the random "failed to load SMS object" never says WHY it failed to load.

RE: Shir, Surely!

Only 58 triggers, hey! Seems a bit slack given that you can sqeeze a max of 63 out of a Stream! Lol.If you run a windowed version of MSTS with the -soundtest switch then it enables loads of other sms error messages to be displayed as well. Like, "Too many Streams", "Error in Stream Read", "Failed to find ??????.wav file", etc. Full debugging is then quite possible.

RE: Shirley you jest

That threw me for a minute too, at least the "register" part, he's responding to the one about why I can't get into UKtrainsim I think. I thought I did register at one time, using the same name and password I use here, but either I've been banned or I forgot what the password is. Too much fun back in the 60s combined with premature senility, possibly, altho my memory is so bad I don't know if it's deteriorated or it was always this bad, I can't remember. Anyway I'll probably have to register again, altho as I recall I had a hard time getting into the file library over there anyway. Got a first class membership here, but I don't download from Olde Blighty often enough to justify paying over there too."quit playin dumb , sniper
youre smarter than that!"I got this rep for being a genius, but it's only because I know which resident experts to ask questions. I'll dig up one now and ask him a question about Sound Mangling System files:Fozzy's K-36 regulator choo-choo… HowDeDooDat? – image 3Hmmm. Well, as Mark Twain once said, "Everyone is ignorant, only in different areas". I've been screwing around with physics and trying to find a global fix for the front coupler bug;http://www.train-sim.com/dcforum/DCForumID3/18876.htmlBut somehow this sound stuff is more complicated and incomprehensible to me. Why stereo for inside sounds and mono for outside sounds? Why have some sounds you can't hear in the cab? Why clickety-clack for an AI train going by from inside the cab, and squeak-squeak but no clickety-clack as it's going by from the outside views? What in the name of Lucifer possessed these morons to make the crossing gate bells muted inside the cab?! Was it really necessary to program it with all this complexity and end up with something that's buggy, iffy, and actually pretty lame?Anyway, I will get back to that 0-8-0 switcher one of these decades, or maybe I'll just upload it with imperfect sounds and patch it later. Worked for KUJU, why not me?

I did the sounds for the K-36, using variable1, which gives no exhaust sound when the throttle is shut. It does require changes in the numbers or the length of the wav files. Check out many of the Jon Davis engines also, I did the sound on many of these (Rayonier, SVRy) using the same setup. You can probably find one that has a similar driver size and copy or alias to your engine.A great tutorial on sound sms files is at steam4me, http://www.railpage.org.au/steam4me/trainsim/tutorials/sms_doku.htmlThere are trade-offs when using this variable1 thing. You get no sound when the engine is used as a helper, on the other hand, if the drivers slip, you hear the exhaust speed up.
