I'm having trouble getting sounds to work with an AI locomotive. The loco has no SOUND folder, the .eng file (for the AI version) SOUNDS line lists a .sms file. Where should this .sms file go? Placing it in the locomotive's folder doesn't do anything. The driveable .eng file is aliased to GP38\\SOUND.Is there a way to open a .sms file to see what is supposed to be happening?Did a search, but didn't find an answer. Thanks,MC
There's a \Train Simulator\Sounds folder, kinda like a global folder for sounds. Look in there and you'll see the .sms file it's looking for. I haven't really looked into this, but .wag files access that "global" sounds folder by default, possibly undriveable AI engines do too.Try making a \Sound folder in the AI engine's folder, put the new .sms file in that. Or, open the AI .eng file, search for "sms", and replace whatever that line says with "../../GP38/Sound/GP38eng.sms". Just so you know, the "whateverlocoCAB.sms" is internal sounds in the cabview, "whateverlocoENG.sms" is the external sounds. An AI engine uses only the external sounds, and down at the very bottom of the eng.sms file under "scalabilty group 0" is the only section used by AI trains, they ignore everything above that.
We'll need the whole path to figure out where it's pointing to. If it's aliased to the GP38, the path should look like this (IIRC):..\\..\\GP38\\SOUND\\gp38.smsThis path is called an "Alias" b/c it is pointing to another loco for it's sound source. You may have already known this, but if you didn't you wouldn't understand what's coming next and I figured it was better to insult your intelligence by mistake than to get you more confused than ever. If the AI loco's sound isn't aliased (i.e. it just says "gp38.sms" without all the ".."s and "\\"s), then you'll have to create a SOUND folder in the loco folder and place the .sms file in it rather than the loco folder. If the .sms doesn't alias to sounds in other folders, you'll either have to alias them yourself or copy all the sounds it's looking for into the SOUND folder of the loco that needs the sound. Assuming that the driveable loco has sounds, it appears to me that in your case it would be easier to copy the sound command line from the driveable loco's .eng file to the AI's .eng file. To answer your question, you can open an .sms file in wordpad the same way you open an .eng file or .wag file. EDIT: Sniper was editing while I was typing, so you got a double-dose of some info.
Thank you both for the info. I know a little about aliasing, and the "standard" setup for sounds, with folders, etc. but some of these add-ons are not set up exactly the same way. I guess my main question would be answered by opening the .sms file (I'm at work right now - don't tell my boss) and seeing how it is set up. I just needed to figure out the relationship between the .sms file and the sounds it wants to use.I'll check things out based on your gracious assistance. Thanks again,MC
I've been searching for assistance on this subject, relative to "copying" (don't know if that's the right phrase), the MLT KHP2 sd40 AI eng files to other units. Please excuse my ignorance about this subject, as I'm just learning. Basically what I'd like to do is have all my sd 40 units sound like the AI units in KHP2, instead of the idling sound that's usually present. The KHP2 sd40 folders have 2 eng files, one is a "standard" file, and the other is a AI file. How can I get these 2 eng files in my other sd40 units? Again, I apologize if my "wording" is incorrect; thanks for any help.
