RE: helper units

I assume there is something like this in your sour sound SMS file:
SIMISA@@@@@@@@@@JINX0x1t______Tr_SMS ( Skip( **** SD40 SMS Used AI SD402 **** ) ScalabiltyGroup( 0
Activation ( ExternalCam () Distance (500) )
Deactivation ( CabCam () PassengerCam () Distance (500) )

Priority ( 5 )
Triggers ( 13

)
)
)
)
)If you want to use all run 8 sounds then follow the example and add some more variable triggers.Will they follow the head end throttle position, no I am afraid not.
I don't know of any way. unless someone out there knows different.Andy K

RE: helper units

Unfortunately, Andy, that won't work, because helper engines use the same scalability group as the player engine (SG 5 if the sliders are set to max) but with no ability to read throttle settings. SG 0 is only for AI trains.There are basically two approaches to solving the problem. One is to create separate helper locomotives, which are simplified player locomotives that have custom sounds in SG 5 that are triggered only by speed (as shown above). It's relatively easy to create the new engines, but making consists is more cumbersome on an ongoing basis, and would be a problem for distributing activities as the consists would have custom stock.The other approach is to create a duplicate set of sound streams in SG 5 that are triggered by speed only, but also have a separate set of triggers that disable the sounds as soon as the throttle is moved. Thus, they are the only streams to play in a helper locomotive, which ignores throttle movements, but are immediately disabled at the first throttle input in a player locomotive. Not ideal either because the sms files are way more complicated to set up, and you may get funny results when starting an activity with a moving train. On the other hand, once the new sms file is made you do not need to re-make consists, distribute custom stock with activities, or add a lot of trains to your trainset folder by having two versions of every engine.With luck, MSTS 2 will solve our dilemma.Jeff

RE: helper units

Yes,
Sorry I missed the fact that I created new locos that are helper units only. I removed the cab file details and prefix the description with a #. I have read that useing locos "doctored" like this as helpers speeds up the frame rate.It works for me.Andy K
