If this is a well known and widely used phenomenon then this post is obsolete. Anyhow...I have found that if you aliases sounds from other engines, like for exaple sandf.wav/x_sandf.wav then the loco sounds (normaly the Eng.sms) can be heard in the pass view. This can come realy in handy if you use an open car with a Pass view cause then you can hear the engine, horn and all other sounds and not just the booring track sound. I have a small tank engine with a very detailed cab interior and I used this method to even get the Cab.sms sounds working! I could when in the Pass view hear the injectors, the fireman stoking the fire and the chuff sounds!
Note! Aliasing chuff/diesel-motor sound files will save a great deal of space in the sound folder./Jonatan
