OK.....new machine; P4 just about maxed out with Radeon 9700Pro, Audigy4 Sound Card, etc.Fresh install of MSTS. "Cleaned up" with removal of start mpeg, etc.Problem: NO exterior sound in "2" or "3" view as well as in "4" (passing) view. That is, no horn/whistle, or train noise. Slight engine sound on zoom-in. Interior (cab-view) sounds are normal.Ideas?!Note: Posted in Train Sim Forum and Sound Forum

RE: Sound Problem

Next tip is to try the the Acceleration sliders in your control panel...
Under Windows/XP-Home they are found at
Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices-PerformanceMove the Hardware acceleration sliders back a notch or two...You may have to experiment....Chuck Schneider

RE: Sound Problem

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!It worked as advertised. Too bad MSTS won't allow (apparently) max settings on this great sound card. Hardware acceleration is now set at only 1/3. But.....it still sounds good.Thanx again!

RE: Sound Problem

It's not MSTS's problem. The problem is with your card. You can't expect MSTS to live up to the demands made of it by the latest "cutting edge" gear. These things didn't exist when the program was written, so obviously any improvements newer components may be capable of are ignored by MSTS.However, your sound card should definitely be able to run at full hardware acceleration regardless of what app. you are using. MSTS just isn't capable of overwhelming your fancy new card.If a Sound Blaster Live has no trouble, it should be a walk in the park for the Audigy. Before anyone mentions that MSTS is indeed overwhelming their cards because in some instances it can't play all the simultaneous audio streams required, this is no fault of the card either. This is due to KUJU's crack programming. The software is limiting things, not the hardware.Back to the Audigy...I'm suspecting something isn't configured properly? If you verify that everything is indeed correct, I'd replace the card because this one bites. It appears it doesn't have much backward compatibility if it can't keep up with a gaming engine written years ago.-Jeff

RE: Sound Problem

Jeff it may just be his system in general...I have an Audigy2 and I run it will all the sound sliders at max. and have no problem with sounds.....So its probably something else....BTW, I also have the hacked soundcfg.dat file the increases the number of simultaneous streams allowed.... Now this is interesting! There are a lot of less frequent sounds I haven't been hearing in awhile, like the crashing sounds when trains de-rail for example. I just backed off a notch on the hardware accelleration slider, and these sounds have returned. I had been using an SB Live 5.1, and now I use a Soundstorm AC97 (alledgedly equiv to Audigy).
It really does seem to bring back missing sounds. I don't know why the higher accelleration setting should restrict some sound rendering, but I suspect it has something to do with priority settings. Go figure.

RE: Sound Problem

OK. I went over the sound config hack again. While I had increased the number of streams, I did not increase the amount of memory to 60MB. This did the trick, and I was able to put the hardware accelleration back to full, and still retain the missing sounds.
All seems well.

RE: Sound Problem

Don't take this the wrong way but sometimes on 'new' systems people don't disable the on-board sound system...resulting in sound problems...
