Is this possible at all? Or is it pretty much hard-wired into MSTS in that one can only hear sound regions inside the cab (vs. sound sources externally)? If it is possible, what would one need to change in an .sms file? Thanks in advance!
If by Sound Regions you mean the track sounds (default, wooden supported, etc) then they do play externally as well. Look in the ttype.dat file for any route and you'll see that each type has two .sms files associated to it, one internal (2D Stereo) and the other external (3D Mono).
If you can't "max out" your sound sliders, all bets are off and you need to seriously think about matching your computer to your desires in MSTS. Tough love, but true. you don't have to like that comment, but I respectfully ask you to believe it without flaming me.
Mike, I am quite interested in the external sound issue. All my locomotives and cars have sounds externally except the Baldwin c21 #360. The author Captain Bazzra and I have communicated quite a few times on this issue. I have not been able to solve it yet. Have you heard of this problem with this specific software model? and if so do you have thoughts on a patch.wmb1941
