I just got the sound package installed on my Dash9 and what a super job you did on this. I put on my stereo headphones and cranked it up and I thought I was in a real GE unit. Thank You for this great add on sound....I used the ear phones cause the rest of the people in my house also thought 4723 was outside my computer room.....

RE: Ken Swenson ---- GE Sounds--Fantastic !!!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words!I'm particularly interested to see if folks have any problems with other soundstreams after installing my package. I do all my development on Test Track (I think it's still in the downloads) beacuse it is a large flat oval with a brake testing section and very little scenery (good framerates) and no imbedded sound sources.Last night, I installed Joseph Realmuto's wonderful modtrkv2.zip to improve my track sounds. After running my test consist up to 50mph and back down, the track sounds persisted for about a minute before dying off.Does anyone know what seems to set the limit on how many streams you can play with MSTS .... sound card (including settings), RAM, processor speed? If you have difficulties with my package, please post some information about your system ... maybe we can all see a little further through the gloom of poor documentation Kuju gave (ooops, sold) us.

RE: Ken Swenson ---- GE Sounds--Fantastic !!!!!!!

Ken the problem you are reporting there is the "Distance Traveled Bug" basically MSTS is not done playing a trak sound when the "distance traveled trigger" tells it to start another... Pretty soon these are queued up and will continue to play for some time after motion stops... the fix is IIRC to change the value for the distance traveled trigger in the SMS file controlling the sounds that are queueing up on you... Search the forum as this has been addressed before....Chuck Schneider

Krswen: I just wanted to ask you to if I could make a suggestion to other forum readers on how to use different sounds and modify your Turbo sound for the SD70M and the Dash 9 Sounds you have. Blaine

Your problem rings a bell for me and I'm not sure if it relates to your problems. The difficulty I was having was that if I was driving a train with more than 3 locos (4+) I noticed that the signal crossing bells did not work. They always work with 3 locos or less. This has been going on since I bought MSTS over a year ago. However, after reading the following post, I applied the new settings and then there was no problems with the signal crossing bells.
____________________________________________Did you know that regardless of your sound card (£5 or £100) the same resource setup is used? The main implication of this is that by default the sim uses 40 3D and 20 2D streams/voices/buffers (whatever the correct terminology is) ie the ability to play independant sound simultaneously. (Note: If your sound card supports hardware accelaration then these buffers are used in preference over software ones). That means max 60 simultaneous sound for all. Seems alot? Well maybe for the default sounds but if you are using any of the loco/coach/wagon sounds I have been involved in developing then not. Player loco takes up 11, each coach 3, (10 coach train = 41), an AI loco 3, wagons in a passing train 2 each (20 wagon traffic = 43). Add to these background, environment, and track sounds, 60 ain't enough and sounds have to be dropped. Well you can have more! If your sound set up is at High and performs ok then try the following. Go to the Global folder and make a backup copy of soundcfg.dat. Open the original one for editing (unicode stuff applies). Look for this line near the bottom SoundSystem ( 5, 40, 20, 31457280 ) The 40 sets the 3D buffers, the 20 sets the 2D buffers. Leave the 20 as it is as the cabview sounds all require 2D buffers. Increase the 40. I have been using 200 for a good few weeks without any problems and no noticeable loss in performance. My line is SoundSystem ( 5, 200, 20, 31457280 ) I don't know how many simultaneous sounds my sound card can play but it is more than 60 for sure. Maybe it's less than 200, but I can't tell. Give it a go. Of course your PC spec will be different to mine so I can't guarantee anything, but I do only have a 1.33 Athlon, 512 Mb RAM and a £10 5.1 CMedia chip based sound card. If things go funny go back to the default settings.

It's fantastic as approach to creating .sms
I appreciate Ken's job but NALW did exact reproduction of distinctive GE FDL "chug". What can be better than recordings from the real engine?
However whole idea is great and I'm experimenting with Ken's .sms for another locos (not GE) with different .wav sources

RE: Ken Swenson ---- GE Sounds--Fantastic !!!!!!!

Sorry for the delay ... I haven't been ignoring the recent posts .... I just got back from a ten day business trip and did not have access to the internet out there.I've not had time to do anything with the turbo sound for EMD. I did do a calculation using a copy of their shop manual, that I bought on E-bay, to determine the correct turbo speeds in each notch, but that's as far as I got. The primary pitch component of the sound is the compressor wheel inducer blade-passing frequency.I've struggled with the "chug". You don't always hear it. For example, we had a loco in notch 8 self load the other day, and as I walked to where a pair of buildings were between me and it, the following happened: there was a narrow opening between the buildings that acted like an acoustic lens. I could position myself so that I only saw the aux cab and most of what I heard was the DB fans. As I walked a little further to where just the engine cab was visible, I heard mostly turbo whine. When I cleared the buildings I could sometimes hear just the deep engine sound, and sometimes the "chug". I think it is strongly dependent on how the sounds are reflected off nearby objects.
