RE: New EmD Or Ge Sounds?

LAST EDITED ON Feb-01-03 AT 12:43 PM (EDT)

And I think we pretty well nailed the GE sounds given the limitations of the MSTS sound system....Doesn't anyone look in the Library or search the forums before posting this kind of drivel??????

RE: New EmD Or Ge Sounds?

>I was just wanting to know if there is going to be any new
>sounds geez! Then that is what you should have asked!!!!!!!
People answered the question you wrote not the one you meant!
For your general store of knowledge people have no way of knowing what you are thinking or what you mean (at least not easily) so you have to ask your question(s) directly!BTW curiosity overwhelms me, what is wrong with the all the existing sound add ons that you feel the need to inquire about new ones?????
Or did you just feel the need to post something to make your mark like a dog with fire hydrants and shrubs?????Chuck Schneider

RE: New EmD Or Ge Sounds?

You want good GE sounds? NALW made 'em.Turn up the sound in a #2 view and the only thing missing will be the smell of the burnt diesel fuel! It's that fantastic hearing those GE's chug.EMD sounds? Plenty of them already available. Turbo, non-turbo, various series.Alco's? Well, the fact that there are hardly any Alco's available to go out and make recordings of....One thing that might give you a better opinion of the sounds available in MSTS -- use HEADPHONES!! The four-dollar speakers that came with your computer just don't quite do it. (Don't think I'm putting you down...it's the truth about the four-dollar speakers, computer manufacturers give you the absolute bare minimum just so you can hear something....and then go out and buy the more expensive replacement speakers.)

RE: New EmD Or Ge Sounds?

I'm sure you will see a big difference....and your folks won't mind if you run the sound up high, as nobody but you will hear them. I started using the headphones as I'd be up at very early hours of the morning on my days off (due to having to get up at 3 a.m. on work days...I work a 4 a.m. to noon shift) so I'd pass the time by running MSTS, and trying to let wifey sleep as she's a 9-to-5'er. Headphones did the trick....

RE: New EmD Or Ge Sounds?

Don't get bummed Raildog! I'm working on locomotive sound packages, but it's going to take a while since I'm working 6-7 days a week lately. And, as chucksc has rightly pointed out, it is not easy to create these within the limitations of MSTS.To give you a little history, for loco sounds Kuju (the folks who actually wrote the code for Microsoft) chose to "interleave" two soundstreams. So for example, for notch 1 they play a fixed pitch .wav file from list one. When you throttle up to notch 2, they switch to a .wav file from list two. For notch 3, back to the next file in list one and so on. They try to "taper" both ends of the playback so the overlap is smooth .... generally not very well. When 3DTS came out with their SD70 (the one in blue with 3DTS all over it ... no longer available BTW) in early 2002 I noticed a much smoother throttle transition. Upon examining the .sms file I saw they were using a single engine sound file rather than 6-8 like MSTS does. They were playing the sound back at different speeds to get the variation in engine sound. With the "DieselEngineMaxRPMChangeRate" parameter set to no more than 20 in the .eng file, the transition is very smooth. The NALW guys have used this concept in their new sound files too.I recently decided to go a step further and break the engine sounds down into "building blocks" which I can manipulate independently. Most .wag files, especially the MSTS ones lump all the locomotive sounds into one combined file and it can sound "muddy" to my ear. I broke out the engine, turbocharger and traction motor sounds out separately and let the sound card mix them. They need to be triggered differently as well. Search on my handle, krswen, back around Jan 27 for a thread called "Improved SD70M sounds ...". I attached a couple of small files that you can copy down to your system and substitute into the 3DTS SD70M (if you have purchased Cajon Pass). Try it and see what you think.I am presently trying to find default sound streams that I can rework (the MSTS HHP motor sounds aren't a bad starting place for example) and will upload a package for the newer GE locos in the next few weeks, I hope.
