After re-installing MSTS I found that my engine horn sound had changed. The cab view sound is very low, and the external (2) view does not have any horn sound. I moved all the slides to high.
The bell and air brake sounds are normal. This is strange, but I'll add it just in case it helps. When in the (2) view, if I move back one car (Ctrl+arrow back) I can hear the engine horn. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Carey

RE: Sound Problem after Re-install of MSTS

If it's not a simple matter of your needing to adjust the sound slider in the "Options" section, let's see if I can shed some light on this for you. It's a little hard to get "back" what you had because likely you didn't know what was there before. No problem, this can be worked out.First, let's explore how sound works somewhat in MSTS:There are essentially two "houses of sound" in the simulator engine-wise. One is what you hear in the cab, the other is what you hear when external, or outside.Sound is not just "played" as one might think. Instead, various sounds are called as needed using various triggers, and some are randomly chosen, while others are just played. Some are one-shots, and some loop. Some play if this or that happens, and fall silent if that or this happens. All in all, it requires some sort of management from within the game. And that's exactly what we've got: A Sound Management System file with the file extension ".sms" This little file, editable with a Unicode text editor, calls all the shots--and the .wav files--when needed. Documentation for the .sms file does not exist except as it has been gleaned by those who have troubled to experiment.Essentially, one of two things is happening since your re-install:1. The .sms file for the engine has been replaced with an older version that gets sounds from a different place.2. The sound file the engine's .sms file is pointing to has been replaced. It is likely the sound file you liked was in one of TrainSim's Global folders, and it may have been put there automatically and without your knowledge by one of the add-ons. When you re-installed, you overwrote the upgrade.A quick solution, if you know which loco has the sound you like, is to re-install it and let it do its thing again.A more wonderful solution is to come to grips with some of the innards of this .sms and .wav business to better understand the risks you take with a re-install.As for the horn improving when you're outside, and have moved toward the rear, that tells me you may need to adjust your slider up some. MSTS is smart, and will only play sounds it has the memory for and whose priority in the .sms file are higher than other sounds--which will be dropped. There's another bit of info present in these threads which links to a suggested improvement in the number of sounds played simultaneously. RE: Sound Problem after Re-install of MSTS

Mike, thank you for the quick response. Since this problem exsist on all routes and with all locomotives, I assume the problem is global. >"A quick solution, if you know which loco has the sound you like, is to re-install it and let it do its thing again".<
If I download a locomotive from the library will that new download overwrite the problem?>"As for the horn improving when you're outside, and have moved toward the rear, that tells me you may need to adjust your slider up some".<
I have moved all the sound sliders to the far right with the exception of the Quantity of Sound slider. I have it at the default, medium.Let me know what action to take and thank you for helping me through this.Carey

RE: Sound Problem after Re-install of MSTS

Carey, What sort of computer are you operating. Could you post the specs for me (including sound card)? My system specs, if you like, are in my profile here.New locomotives downloaded from the library may or may not "overwrite" your problem. Likely not unless it's an auto-install and those are, well, smoke and mirrors. Was it a diesel horn? Can you be more specific about what you drive, what you like, and what train(s) you have installed that you use?Regards,Mike Apsey

RE: Sound Problem after Re-install of MSTS

Mike, I am using all diesel engines on my route. I have downloaded 3D trains F3, Train Artisan E7, E8, GP9. GP7, GP30 from the file library.I ran some more test on the default routes this evening and here are the results;
The following default routes has a loud cab horn but you must move back one car/engine (CTR + arrow back) in order to hear outside engine noise and horn:
Hisatsu Line
Innsbruck - St. Anton
NE Corridor
Settle & Carlisle Line
Tokyo - HarkoneMarias Pass has no cab horn and the same outside noise problem exsist. Also, I did the re-install in order to add the four international routes, which I did not add in the orginal install.

RE: Sound Problem after Re-install of MSTS

Mike, thank you so much for all your help. Your idea of re-installing MSTS the second time worked like a charm. I may have done something wrong in the initial re-install. All sounds are back to normal and even the outside horn and bell are loud and clear.Thank you!!Carey

For the record . . .My friend Carey here, (CStevens) seems to have solved his problems with some e-mail coaching. Sorry the forum missed the exchange. But in the words of Linda Ellerby: "...and so it goes."Regards,Mike Apsey
